Yet another FTM question. I've been feeding DD rice cereal with breast milk for about a month now and it's been going really well. I figured that we could start with some baby food - carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. I bought some earth's best first carrots (i didn't have time to cook - i know it's better to but i just can't find the time!) and tried it with DD - TOTAL failure.
HOWEVER, when i sent them to daycare, one of the DCP, who i am convinced is a certified baby whisperer, managed to get DD to eat the carrots. When i asked her how, she told me she mixed a little bit of carrot with rice cereal and DD gobbled half a jar down.
So, i still don't get it - do i make the rice cereal with the breastmilk, THEN add carrots? Do i just mix the rice cereal with some of the carrots? I realize i'm needlessly complicating this but i didn't know if someone had done this before.
As always, thanks for the advice!
Re: Baby food and rice cereal?
yes, needless complication!
but i probably asked similar questions when i was a FTM!
you can mix just about anything that is age appropriate. i always found that if i offered a familiar food mixed with a new food, it was more likely to be eaten.
so try mixing new foods with the rice cereal/BM mixture!
our DCP did this too - we learned that DS liked his foods thicker than we thought, and adding just the cereal (without bm) to the baby food thickened it up perfectly.
For thicker baby foods, I think the combos that used bananas, oatmeal, or peas for example, we didn't have to mix in any cereal. FWIW, DS loved peas and hated carrots at first.
ETA: I had high aspirations for making purees too but it never happened. I always checked ingredients though and so many of the earth's best are just the item and water, so don't feel too bad about it!
Don't feel bad about your LO only eating at daycare. I remember feeling totally betrayed that J wasn't eating solids at home, but I went in one day and he was chowing down on oatmeal with a big smile on his face. WTH, kid?
Anyway, you can feed her the purees straight up, or watered down with a little BM (depending on her preference). No need to add rice cereal or milk unless she seems to need it.

You've gotten some good advice. I just wanted to chime in and say that we were mixing rice cereal with everything DD ate in the beginning. She seemed to like the texture and she would eat a lot of it.
However, we think this caused her to have major constipation. So, now we just feed her the purees on their own and she also gets a serving of prunes everyday.
