Breastfeeding

BF with supplementation

Our 5 week old DS is BF with supplementation at the breast.  He still eats every 2 hours on the dot (1.5-2 ounces of formula supplementation) while awake but can go 4-5 hours at night.  He controls the amount he eats so when he gets sleepy/looks satisfied I stop feeding.  The LC estimates that he is getting about 30% of his intake from my BM (I have a low supply).  Does anyone know if it's normal that he still eats this frequently (8-12 times per day)?  I thought formula was supposed to process slower in the gut.

Re: BF with supplementation

  • Sounds normal enough to me. Smile If you're getting 4-5 hours stretches at night, I'd just count your blessings.

  • He doesn't have a tongue tie, he actually latches really well but he is a lazy eater.  I had a postpartum hemorrhage and lost about 3 liters.  The LC thinks I have a partial Sheehan's Syndrome and that there was damage to my pituitary which resulted in low milk supply.  8 days after he was born we did a weighted feed (45 minutes) and he got only .25 ounce total from both sides.

Since then I've been using an SNS to supplement at the breast and power pumping once a day.  That's in addition to Fenugreek, blessed thistle and mother's milk teas.  The last weighted feed was last week and it was .75 ounce from one side and 10ml from the other.  Not enough to sustain him obviously considering that was a morning feed and he gets irritated with lack of flow faster in afternoon/evening.

So yeah, we're doing everything we can think of to augment my supply but I'm not hopeful that I'll ever be able to EBF.
