Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Babymooning in Dallas - local recs please?

Hi there! My husband and I are babymooning in Dallas in 3 weeks and would love local recommendations of places to see/things to do. We are staying at the Marriott downtown and going to the Darius Rucker concert at AA on Saturday night ("History in the Making" is our song!), but open the rest of the weekend.  Love local (not chain) restaurants (steakhouses for my husband please?) and shops, walking in cute neighborhoods, art galleries, live music (blues recs?), historic locations, great weekend brunch spots, and would love a great baby store to stop in.  Thanks in advance for your help! And if anyone is coming to Baltimore/DC in the future, happy to return the favor!

  • Will you have a vehicle? Dallas is not a very walk-able city and it helps greatly if you have a car, but there are some walk-able areas that you could maybe cab it to, and then walk around.

The uptown area is one such option. You could drive there or cab there and then spend some time doing several things in the area. Breadwinners on McKinney Ave is great for weekend brunch (Sat or Sun) and then you can jump on the free McKinney Ave trolley to get around or just see the area. I think the trolley only covers a couple of miles, but it is free and I think will get you to the art galleries or pretty close. You can also take the trolley to West Village, which is a small outdoor shopping/cafe area, but with a large majority of chain retail. Warning about Breadwinners, it gets crazy busy so if you show up after 10 am you will most likely have to wait, but the wait is usually pretty quick for two people. If you're doing the galleries in the evening, the Screen Door is a good restaurant and I *think* they have some sort of gallery shuttle.

Another fun option  is the Bishop Arts area (it's very small, probably just a few square blocks). Again you'll need a car or cab from downtown, but can spend a few hours on foot once you get there. Hattie's is a great restaurant for Saturday lunch or Sunday brunch. There are lots of fun little shops around there. About a block behind Hattie's is a children's store (can't remember the name) but with lots of cute little smocked outfits and things like that.

Oh and for steakhouses I recommend Al Biernat's on Oaklawn Ave. Capital Grille is also good for steak, but Al Biernat's is best. If you like Mexican food, try Mia's on Lemmon Ave.

    Have fun!

  • Not planning to rent a car. Just cab or walk. And I didn't know about the trolley so will investigate.  Recs look terrific.  Thanks so much!

  • Cabs are very difficult in Dallas in my experience, I used to live in DC and catching a cab is so easy there!  Here you will almost always have to call one and they can take a long time to arrive.  Renting a car would make the most sense.  PP recs for neighborhoods are good but they are spread out - map them out and you'll see.  In Bishop Arts there's a great restaurant called Hattie's.  Steaks and non-chain - Al Beirnat's has been recommended, also Bob's Steak and Chop House, Three Forks (not in Dallas but in Addison) and Nick & Sams.  Also, since you're here you might want to see Ft. Worth.  Stockyards can be fun to walk around in.  The museums in Ft Worth are amazing.    But again, it's 60 miles away and a cab would be sort of ridiculous.
