  • We have 6 Andrews in our extended family.

Two go by Andrew, two by Drew and two by Andy, so it's hard for me to pick a favorite. Probably Drew.

  • DS #1 is Andrew and we call him Drew.  My MIL tried calling him Andy a couple times and I about lost it.  Andy is NMS at all.
  • i LOVE drew.  andrew was my #1 boys name had dd been a boy, and he would have been drew.

  • these results are surprising to me!

maybe all the drews i've ever known were assholes.

i strongly prefer the name Andy.

  • Drew to me is it's own name.  I wouldn't consider it a nickname for andrew.  Andy, yes.

But in general I think you can't choose nicknames.  They just happen.

Really?  Since the name is anDREW, it's actually part of the name and seems like an obvious short version to me... just like Chris for CHRIStopher.

I sort of agree with you on the 2nd part.  But people can still have preferences and I was curious about what most would say theirs would be.

  • yeah I know intellectually it's related to the name but anyone I've known with the name Andrew... it just wouldn't occur to me to shorten it to drew.  I think people usually shorten names by cutting off the end.. not the start.

  • We named DS Andrew but call him Drew.  But for us it wasn't so much a nickname.  We planned to name him Drew but didn't like the sound of just Drew with his middle name, Michael.  We thought Andrew Michael sounded much better (and we liked Andrew too).  So his official name is Andrew Michael but he goes by Drew.  If he chooses to go by Andrew or even Andy (cringe) when he is older, that is his choice.
