Codeine to supress horrible cough-safety?

HI all,

I've been sick for over a week.  I had norovirus followed immediately by a horrible cough, sore throat, painful ears, etc.  I've been to the doctor 3 times in the past week and they finally prescribed me codeine (category c) to supress my cough because I've lost so much sleep from the painful throat (better now) and relentless coughing all night long.  Both the midwife and the doctor said it was fine.  I'm in my 20th week.  I took a half pill 15 mg yesterday afternoon to make sure it didn't make me nauseous which it didn't then I took the 30 mg last night at bedtime.  I finally slept!  I hope to take again tonight and possibly the next night if I really need it and then stop taking it.  Any experience/thoughts about the risk of taking 30 mg of codeine at bedtime?

  • If your doctor prescribed it, it should be fine.  I think they know about the risks, benefits a lot more than a bunch of ladies on the internet:)

  • I had a horrible cough a few weeks ago and my dr mentioned that codeine is what they prescribe to pregnant women for it. She ended up putting me on an inhaler before the codeine, but I'm guessing it's safe if necessary (cant help you about dosages though).

  • Ive been prescribed codeine for my back bone popping out of place. They said i can take it every now and then but to try to take it as little as possible in the 3rd trimester. That being said if your doctor or midwife said you can take it every night follow what they say. They know whats best for you.

  • It has been used in pregnancy for a long time and it is relatively safe, safer than a lot of over the counter cough remedies. I was prescribed Tylenol with codeine for pain earlier, and I was apprehensive about it too. My doctor said it is safe and better for you and your baby than being miserable and not sleeping. Feel better!

    This.

And my cough syrup script with Codeine saved me when I was sick over Christmas. It still took about 3 weeks to get over, but the codeine at least gave me some relief and helped me sleep.

  • Thanks ladies for your personal experiences.  I trust my doctor but I also just wanted to hear real people who took it and were ok  :)
  • They gave me a couple tylenol 3s when I was in the hospital last July. I haven't asked my OB if I can have a tylenol 1 when the migraines get really bad, but I assume it would be alright. (I switched OBs this pregnancy, so she may have something different to say than the other one).
