Attachment Parenting

Need a recommendation: co-sleeping w/ our adopted son

DH and I are in the process of adopting a little boy from Russia.  He'll probably be between 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 when he comes home.  For attachment purposes, we want to have him sleep in our room for the first 3-6 months, however we do not have space in our room for another bed.  We were thinking about getting some kind of a co-sleeper like one of those bassinets you can attach to the side of the bed for a baby.  Is there a product like this that is able to hold a late toddler/preschooler size person?

(I know someone might ask, but sleeping in our bed is not an option.  He will not be used to that kind of closeness after being in an orphanage and we simply would never sleep b/c our bed is not that big.)

  • Have you thought about side carring a convertible crib or a toddler bed?

I have, but we have  platform bed so he wouldn't be on the same "level" as us, if that makes sense.

  • Could you use a large size pack n play? You couldn't use the bassinet option but he could sleep in the play pen part. There would be the mesh barrier between your bed and him though, which might defeat the point.

  • I would ask about this on the adoption board. We are a great group :)

My situation is very different since we were with DD since birth. I would think your son may have some difficulty with a co-sleeping arrangement if he is used to sleeping on his own?? There are Moms on the adoption board who have brought their little ones home at different ages and their experience may be helpful to you.

  • Just a point - we sidecar the crib and our mattress is on the floor with a box spring. It is the perfect height for the lowest setting of the crib.

  • I would imagine that he's used to sleeping with other kids in a room with him so being on his own may be scary, having him in your room sounds like a good idea. We just transitioned DS from bedsharing to cosleeping, he's now very happy in a small toddler bed in our room. The bed is quite small it's close enough to me that I can mean down and adjust his blankets or soothe him if need be but we all have our own space. Perhaps this option would work for you.

  • we just got rid of our bed frame so now our mattress/boxspring are on the floor. its a pretty thick mattress so its still a nice height for us and we don't feel like we are on the floor - and DS can get on and off the bed easily.

We got a toddler bed and put it next to ours. the mattress is slightly lower than ours, but he can still see us and move from his bed to ours as he pleases.

the cosleeper you are talking about would definitely not work for a toddler/preschooler
