Breaking the binky habit?

I really thought DD was going to be ok without it, and I'd rather get rid of them sooner than later, but last night was freaking awful. I think she is cutting a new tooth, but maaaaaaaaaaaaan! She hadn't had a pacifier in like 36 hours and at 4 this morning, after an hour + of nursing, I caved. I needed rest.

So when did you get rid of it? Any tips? I know she is definitely old enough to find her thumb, I just never see her sucking on it. Plus, I thought pacifiers were better for their mouth development anyway?!?  I just really have even more motivation to get rid of it sooner than later after seeing a 4 year old passed out on mommies lap with a freaking pacifier. It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

*judgmental much? apparently :)

  • DD still has hers in the car and in bed.  She knows the rules and drops into the crib or carseat when she gets out.  Right now, I'm cool with that.  She's never walking around or playing with it in her mouth.  I'm going for a gradual thing :)

  • i'm with you... we're dealing with thumb vs binky right now... she's happy chewing on her thumb, but for sucking (naps/bedtime/fussy time) she wants that stupid paci.

my feeling is that once they can walk AND talk its time to let it go. my last ditch age is 2 i think. at that age i think you can minorly reason with them (MIL said something about a big girl binky fairy who takes it away for you one night).

but i'm with you on the 4 year old thing... last time we went to the Pedi. there was a 5 year old with a paci, taking it out to tell his mom that he was getting the nose spray flu vaccine not the shot... i mean come on... if he can be that verbal and put together that coordinated of a sentince then by god you should be able to get rid of the paci. *sorry minor vent there* lol

  • Around one, we started only giving Jack the paci for bedtime and naps...then at 2.5 we took it away cold turkey. ?We were originally planning on doing this at 2, but Colin was born 3 months before Jack's second birthday and we figured it would be too traumatic.

?We just told him he was too big to use a paci and that they were for babies. ?A couple of rough days and then he was fine. ?By then Colin was using a paci and Jack was/is okay with that - he never took Colin's paci for himself.

  • I am more for the paci than the thumb. ?Thumb is MUCH harder to break. ?We dealt with?withdrawal?from my sister. ?I am actually trying to get Caedan to take his paci back. ?But alas he has dropped all his comfort items. ?

Anyway I don't think your dd is too old to still have it. ??
