1st Trimester

How long before first appointment?

I called early last week to make my first appt and they scheduled me 3 weeks out!

Is this normal or am I overreacting? I recently moved so I wanted to find a new doc in the area, so I asked friends for advice but now I'm thinking the wait seems long considering my history (infertility, pcos and miscarriage). I explained to them that I wasn't sure how far along since my cycles are off, so who knows what can happen between now and then.

I'm already a nervous wreck and the wait is killing me. Any advice? Should I keep the appt or try to find someone else that can see me sooner?

Thanks in advance!

  • I would say this is pretty normal. Most doctors see you at 8 weeks.

This.  However, if you have a history of m/c then I've heard that you usually go in sooner.  Did you tell the Dr's office that when you called?

  • Out of curiosity, did you inform the scheduling nurse of your medical history? This is pretty normal wait time for an appointment but they may have scheduled you sooner if they knew all the details. Then again three weeks out may honestly be the earliest they have for non emergencies.

  • my appt isn't until 10weeks.. .and i had a m/c a year ago.  it sucks.  hang in there!  you could always call and give them more details and/or be added to a cancellation list.  good luck!

  • I found out on tuesday we are going in on friday because i could be 3-4months already. Since I was told I probably could never have a baby on our own. Although I have heard some ladies have to wait for 4-6 weeks. COngrats on the baby news :)
  • Sounds normal to me. My first appointment was at 9 weeks 5 days.
  • Yes, it's normal.  My dr. won't even see me until I am 10 weeks.

    Congratulations!

  • The average first appointment is scheduled between 8 and 10 weeks. If you feel like you are already that far along then it wouldn't hurt to call back and see if they can get you in earlier.
  • My midwife also didn't schedule me until 10 weeks.  However, I called a couple of times because of spotting with red blood and they then had me come in for a sonogram right away at that point.  If you have any complications or something unusual, just call them and explain that you're worried and would like to talk to someone before the 3 weeks.  Unfortunately, if you're really early along (like pre 6 to 8 weeks), there's not much they can do other than confirm you're pregnant and give you advice for nutrition, etc.

  • I did explain that I have a history of m/c and also my infertility issues. However, I did not think of asking to be put on a cancellation list so I think I'll call and ask about that. I'm sure if I was seeing my regular doc in Columbus I would have been in by now, but I'm guessing since they don't know the severity of my medical history they aren't as concerned as I am.

Oh well, thanks so much for all your comments and support :)
