Do you have a will?

We don't and I really need to get on it.  There was a story on the news this morning that parents of a 2 month old were killed in a head-on collision.  If MH and I both died, I can imagine both our moms trying to get custody of DS and I would want him to be with my sister.  Anyway, isn't there a computer program that makes them or do you have to see a lawyer?  I don't even know where to start!

  • We went through my employers EAP program (most large corporations have one) and they have a free subscription to legalzoom.com. We will e ventually go to a lawyer to get a more detailed will but this gave us just a basic will that set up custody for LOs should something happen to us and dictates that my dad and his wife will have custody and be executors of the estate if both DH and I were to pass. It literally took like 40 minutes.

  • I have had a will for a few years, dh just did his after Li was born.  I changed mine after Li was born so both of ours say that my parents will get custody.  Apparently I need to change mine again because of the new death taxes and when SIL gets married in October we are going to make her and her husband guardians if anything happens to us.  We use a lawyer but he is pricey.  If you don't use the main lawyer but use the associates it is much less expensive.

  • No, but we really need to do this too.  It's been on my to do list forever.  My husband is an attorney, but he doesn't do wills.  We'll probably have a friend of his do it for us.  I don't expect it to be intricate - just basics with who gets custody and what to do with our assets.

  • My Dh is an attorney and has had to handle many of messy estate cases so yes he was on that asap lol.  I'm not sure if you can do one w/out an attorney?  It's pretty lengthy but most atty's have a set price that they charge for a will/ estate planning if it's pretty straight forward.  We have it where our DS would go to bro/sis-inlaw if we both passed and DS was still a minor as well as other specifications as to how we would want him raised, grandparent visits etc, then it even gets into what would I want DH to do to me if I was on life support, pull plug or not, how long etc,, it took me about a week after he made it for me to debate back and forth about different things in it but you can always change it the important thing is to at least have something set up because like I mentioned before I've seen my H handle some really messy cases where people didn't have one and it's not pretty and really hard on the families.  GL!
