Meatloaf in a Crockpot?

Has anyone ever cooked a meatloaf in a Crockpot?  I want to make one this weekend, but I don't really feel like spending nap time mixing it up etc.  So I thought that I could whip it up in the morning while making breakfast, then put in in the crockpot.

I found a few recipes online, that say people have done it, but I was wondering if anyone I "know" has done it.

Re: Meatloaf in a Crockpot?

  • sorry, no crockpot advice here.  but, we've prepped meatloaf the night before and kept it in the pan in the fridge and then just put it in the oven when we're ready to make it the next day.  Turned out great and definitely a time-saver!

  • I haven't, but after cooking a Christmas ham in the crockpot, I'm a believer that you can cook anything in the crockpot.  Go for it and let us know how it turns out!

  • I haven't done meatloaf in a Crockpot but I do frequently mix up a huge batch, put them in individual containers, and freeze them. I buy those disposable metal tins at the grocery store and make 4-6 meatloafs during each prep session. I know the prep of meatloaf is pretty messy so if I do it I like to make a lot. Anyway, I just wanted to share that idea even though I know it doesn't help with your question. I would say to definitely go for it and let us know how it turns out.

  • I made the cooks illustrated version in the crockpot a few weeks ago.  It was tasty, but I think I used more meat than the recipe called for and forgot to up the binder so it wasn't as neat as it could be.  It's easiest to slice it into wedges btw.  These are the tips I remember from making it.  You need to make a tinfoil sling to take it out of the crockpot (spray with cooking spray) and a tinfoil coll for the back of the slow cooker.  That's where the heating element is and it prevents the meat in the back from burning (the collar is a piece of foil folded lengthwise to a thickness of 6 sheets (you may need to use two pieces of foil).  The cooking time btw in the slow cooker was something like 5-6 hours on low so it is definitely not an all day operation.
