LO is never awake and happy

I feel like I am failing DS.  Whenever he is awake during the day he is at least fussing, if not downright screaming.  It doesn't seem to come directly from eating, though I suppose he could be uncomfortable with digestion.  I give him gas drops if it is obviously gas (I'm trying the 5 words babies say idea).  I've most of the five S's, as I understand them, and they don't really work.  He sleeps pretty much through the night in his RnP.  But I get maybe 5 minutes a day when he's awake and content, and that's when he's being held.  Don't even think of putting him down!

I'm convinced this is not normal, but I'm not ready to call it colic (because he sleeps pretty well).  Is he just a fussy baby?  How often should he be awake and happy?  I know every baby is different but I want those smiles and happy times!

Re: LO is never awake and happy

  • I wrote this exact post twice...but my LO doesnt sleep that long at night in the rnp.  he is rarely happy when awake.  I think its fairly normal-ish from what my pedi said

  • I'm in the same boat:( I feel like a bad mother!
  • I 100% know how you feel.  My LO is hardly ever happy when awake.  I usually get 20 minutes of awake/content time in the morning and 20 min during bathtime each evening.  Otherwise he is crying when he is not eating or sleeping.  His sleeping has only improved since we started him on meds for his reflux, and it is still not good.  Unfortunately for us he definitely has colic because he also cries every night for at least 2-3 hours from 7-11.  I wish I could just call him fussy!

  • My DS was this way until he was about 2 1/2 - 3 months. It killed me when he wasn't happy because as a new mom it made me feel like he didn't like me and I felt bad that I couldn't calm him in any way. I ended up having PPD with him and all of that didn't help how I was feeling. Thankfully DD is not always fussy and is happy when awake. But just know this will pass. I know for some babies (until a certain age) they don't know what to do with themselves if awake. They are use to sleeping or eating and if they aren't doing either they don't know what to do. They soon realize what to do while awake and when they want to eat and sleep. Don't worry, it will pass. Hang in there mama!

  • Some babies are just tougher than others.  Don't worry, it will get better and better as time passes.

  • I wrote a post just like this a couple of weeks ago. Since then, DS was diagnosed with reflux and his meds for that seem to help, however he is still definitely a fussier baby than seems average. I'd talk to the pedi about it to see if they think it's anything medical like reflux that is causing at least some of the problems.

  • LO was like this at six weeks.  I tried everything to help his gas.  Now at 7 weeks he is suddenly better.  Babies are crazy

  • Some of these responses are giving me hope.  My LO is rarely content.  It makes for a difficult day every day. :(

  • My lo was like this from birth to week 5 and week 8, I was convinced I gave birth to the devil :( We had two good weeks and so far this week it's ok... It's so frustrating I know but hold in there! I read the happiest baby on the block and it really helped. Once they are happy you suddenly forget what it was like before

  • Glad I'm not the only one with this issue!
  • My DS is a fussy baby too. It's been getting better week by week. But sometimes its a day by day thing. You never know! It's not colic bc he sleeps fine and I can calm him with the 5 S's. He has some reflux but that's touch and go...pretty sure it's diet related so I have to monitor my dairy intake and stay away from very acidic foods...one night I ate tomato soup and that was an experience. It will get better. I've always heard the 3 month mark is the magic number. I'm just trying to hold on until then. DS is such a little monkey always hanging off of me and usually wants nothing to do with his dad for more than 5-10 min at a time.

  • I'm breathing a sigh of relief reading this thread. DD sleeps well at night for long stretches but during the day awake time =/= happy time. She does have periodic stretches where she is happy just looking around but those are few and far between the stretches where she is fussing.
