Ergo baby carrier

Ok, so does anyone reccomend or not reccomend the Ergo Baby Carrier?  They are expensive, but my husband's job causes us to go out of town over weekends some, and I want to easily be able to cart baby in it while out and about.  I have read it is easy on back, so I am checking out ebay and craigslist to see if I can find a used one rather than buying brand new.  TIA!

Re: Ergo baby carrier

  • I love mine.  We used it with DS from when he was 6 months old to when he was about 2.  He's over 100 percentile for hieght and 90th percentile for weight and he was never too heavy for it.

Just a word of warning, they are not designed for newborns.  You either have to buy the infant insert or a different carrier for the first months.  We are getting a Baby K'tan (many people also rec the Moby) for the first few months because the infant insert seems way too hot for summer.

  • Thanks that is good to know.  I was going to get the insert, b/c we will be in Michigan for the summer, so I am hoping it will be a little cooler on us.  I will see how it goes.  What is the difference between the sport and regular edition do you know?

  • I highly recommend it.  It's easy to put on and you can carry baby around all day without any back pain.  If you don't want to buy the infant insert, I've heard that you can all just roll up a towel.  They basically just need something under them to give them some more height so that they're face isn't being suffocated by your boobs.  As soon as baby is tall enough (which varies for every child) you don't need the insert anymore--I think a lot of babies stop using it around 2 months, but I don't know for sure b/c we didn't get ours until Micah was about 5 months old.
  • Love the ergo- super comfortable, so worth it.  Plus, when I wore LO on the front it reminded me of carrying him inside and rubbing my belly! Smile
  • I love our Ergo Sport.  DS is 20 months and 26 lbs. and I still use it all the time.  The fabric is a little lighter weight, there is an air vent, the hood tucks away into a pocket, and the straps (shoulder & waist) are longer, which is good if your DH might want to carry LO too.

  • The Boba is also an excellent carrier that's a lot like the Ergo in terms of ease of use. The newest version can be used for a newborn with no insert and all the way up to 45 lbs, I think? I find it much more comfortable as LO gets bigger.

  • We have the Ergo sport and still use it with DD, who is about 22 pounds and 34 inches tall.  We didn't get it until she was almost a year, though, so we don't have the infant insert (although I really liked Moby for the newborn stage anyway).

The differences I know of between the sport and the regular model are the length of straps (a must if either of you are tall) and that the fabric is lighter/more breatheable.

  • I appreciate everyones input.  We are very outdoorsy people and even though I know the baby will slow us down some; I don't expect to not go with him most of the time.  I also plan on spending most of the summer with him in Michigan, so baby and I are not home alone, so I think it will come in handy, but I am going to just have to wait and see I supposed how useful it winds up being.  :)

for what it's worth, i have read on the Bump many times about how unbearably hot a Moby is in the summer.

  • They are amazing!! I used it with my daughter until she was a year old. Its amazing because you can carry them on the front when they are little and then on your hip and back as they get bigger. I used it when we went out and even around the house if she was having a clingy day and wanted to be held while i got stuff done.

  • I highly recommend the Ergo. I have the original one, and I love it. I used it with DS from about 4 weeks (first time I could stand the waistband being over my c-section incision) until around 2 (when he wanted to walk everywhere by himself instead of mommy carrying him). The infant insert is not necessary. I was able to use it with DS with just a rolled up receiving blanket under his butt to make him be a little higher. It can get warm in the summer (I'm in MN), but the Moby is definitely warmer than the Ergo. (DS was a July baby, and we had both the Moby and the Ergo.)

  • I never had an Ergo but I have heard all great things about them (and also heard you need to buy the infant insert separate, as PP mentioned). With DD, I had a mei tai and loved it. Check out babyhawk.com or meitaibaby.com. You can also buy them used on thebabywearer.com.

For this baby, I have added a wrap conversion ring sling and a Beco Butterfly II to my stash. The Beco comes with a newborn insert and is similar to an Ergo (buckles, etc.). They are about the same price as an Ergo. I just scored mine for 50% off on MamaBargains but you can also find them used on The Babywearer.

I think an Ergo, Beco, or Boba would all be great choices for soft-structured buckle carriers, or I would highly recommend a mei tai (my favorite!). All of these are ergonomically correct, comfy for mom and baby, and are not "crotch danglers" (like the Bjorn) so you can't go wrong with any of those. Babywearing made so many outings SO much for convenient for me. Good luck :)
  • I used one a lot with DS. I plan to use it again with the next baby!
