Gripe water and gas drops--FTM question

The doctor didn't give me much information at our check up yesterday. I have a gassy/colicky little monster and I want to ease some of his hiccups. He hiccups so hard that he gags and then gets really upset. I breast feed and supplement with formula before bed to fill his belly so he sleeps good and falls asleep without fussing. I'm considering finding a formula with less iron to see if that helps also.

If you use either gripe water or gas drops, how often and how much? I'm going to head to the store soon so I can get it started and get him some relief.  Thanks!

Re: Gripe water and gas drops--FTM question

  • I know that many people use Gripe Water and many think it is awesome that it is all natural, but my H did a lot of research on it and concluded that it may not be the best/safest thing to give to our baby. I have not done the research/reading as we needed to divide and conquer for some baby decisions, but I do suggest looking into it more yourself so that you can make the best decision for you.

  • We give DD gas drops all day. I add a few drops to each bottle, give them to her before she sleeps, when she can't latch on to her paci. We LOVE Mylicon! They can have it up to 12 times a day and we use every available drop!

How do the drops help with regards to the paci issue?  As I speak I'm taking a mini break, because my LO is so upset wanting the paci.

  • We tried Gripe Water and it did not phase LO.  We switched to Pedia Care Infant Gas Drops (just like Mylicon) and they work wonders! I usually give him a dose after each feeding (his pedi said this is perfectly safe) because his little belly goes nuts afterwards.

    Good Luck!

It gives it a little 'taste' and keeps her sucking on it long enough to get a good latch. Just a drop or two really helps. And I think it helps her swallow the gas drops so they can work. So even when I give her a full dose I give her the paci right away because she sucks it down rather then spit its drops back up.

  • We've used both just a handful of times.  The dosing is on the packaging.  They seem to help DD when she's really uncomfortable, but we don't use them unless she really needs them.

  • I use both interchangably but the gas drops (oval is what I use) are easier because they have a dropper.  I have to use an actual spoon to use the gripe water.  Both work and I use gripe water if she's fussy between feedings and not hungry or if she's spitting up more.  I use the gas drops if she is just fussy right after feedings.

  • We use both. I use the gas drops more than the gripe water. I don't see a significant difference with the gripe water. You can use gripe water up to 6xs in a 24hr period. And you can use the gas drops according to the package (like pp mentioned, no more than 12xs per day).

I will say that most gas drops have the same ingredient regardless of the brand name: Simethicone, so don't be fooled thinking one brand is better than the other when each has the same active ingredient.
