traveling by plane with 7 yr old - suitcases/carryon quesion

What has worked best for you?  She can carry/roll something.  We'd prefer not to check luggage, at least on the way there. I think we each get a suitcase and a purse/backpack.  I'm double checking the regulations (PSA many places are changing the regulations in March.  We're traveling in Feb.)

I'm thinking to change my usual over the shoulder carry on to a backpack for easier carrying, right?

What have you found that works best for the child's carry on?  Is a backpack also easy to get in and out of on the plane? Doe sit store under seat?

She wants to bring this tiny hard sided suitcase and while cute, it either rolls nor has straps so I think that's out for us.

Ideally, we may be bringing ONE actual suitcase that fits in the overhead on the plane and then 2 purse/backpacks. If her stuff and mine can fit in one suitcase.  It's 4 days.

Any other travel tips?  We have books, mp3 player, tag books, my phone, snacks but snack suggestions are good, etc.

The ride down is nonstop, back has a nasty layover.

TIA!

  • I bought my DD a rolling suitcase & she loves that she can roll it herself.  Makes her feel like a "big girl".

  • I do think a roller back pack will be easier, probably for both of you.  For you, I would pack a clutch or small foldable purse in your luggage or carry on  so you don't feel like you need to take a back pack everywhere at your destination.  If you need a booster, check it at the curb/ticket counter for free so that you don't have to lug it far.

  • My kids have always just brought a backpack. They carry it easily and then just stick it under the seat (with access to grab things if they need it).
  • Do rolling backpacks fit under the seat?

With my DD the rolling suitcase does, so I would think that the backpack would also.  DD legs do not touch the ground yet so all space under the seat gets used even my purse usually goes on her side.

  • My DD has been using a rolling L.L. Bean backpack since she was 4.  It's remarkably roomy and she can maneuver it easily.  It fits under the seat.

  • I got all excited to buy the llbean rolling backpack and they are just about out of stock!  They just have light pink. I don't want to invest that kind of money for something that will get dirty quickly.  Boo.

Plus I just bought our Seussland tickets - holly cow that is a lot of money.  I had no idea what I was getting into.  My bff had asked if I wanted to do anything while visiting down there - zoo, sea world, seussland, etc. and I sort of figured they were all in the same price range.  Universal wasn't the point of our trip.  Girl time with DD and time with BFF was the point and I thought how nice because she likes Dr. Seuss. And I told her we'd go there after we talked about where she'd like to go.

    Woah.

Keep the advice coming, obviously I need it!

  • All three of my kids have these:

In the past DD and DS1 did their own rolling and somewhat packing of 1. extra outfit 2. small toys 3.  crayons and a coloring book 4.  book  5.  snacks and 6.   DVD player and/or 3DS or Leap Pad (something similar).

They put them under the seat.  In time, my hope is to start them a travel collection.  I alway check all luggage because I generally fly alone with my kids.  Just noticed some are on sale.....

DS2 has one of these also (dinosaurs) but he used to sit with me so I didn't bring him as he didn't get another carry-on.  I am planning on bringing it during our trip in March when he will have his own seat.  I will also but his CARES in his.

Prior to the PKB bags we had little character ones but they didn't hold much.
