The Fisher Price Rock 'n Play wasn't around when DS was born. Now I feel like everybody has one and raves about it. DD will be in our room in the pack n play for nighttime sleep (ha, nighttime sleep!), but I'm contemplating getting one of these for downstairs or other times - if you had it did you like it? Honestly, I'm a complete sleep safety freak (no bumpers, DS didn't even have a blanket until about 18 months and still sleeps in a slep sack) and I'm a little worried about all the padding in what looks like the "new" one:
But, the older one has more of the "causes flat spots on baby's head" reviews.
I know, I know, I am way over thinking it and too worried about these things - at least I realize that, right?
I'd love to know how you like it if you have one!
Re: Rock 'n play?
we didn't have this, can you borrow one to see if your DD likes it or find one cheaper on CL?
One of my friends had it and loved it, but we didn't get one because we have a dog and I felt like it could be dangerous if the dog accidentally ran into it chasing a toy or something. We typically put DS in the pack n play at night and for naps, and used the swing when he was sick or otherwise unhappy sleeping normally.
ETA: we actually got a second (really basic) PnP for about $50 on albeebaby to keep in the living room. When he was a newborn, it was a place to change him, in addition to a place for him to sleep and now we use it in the kitchen to keep LO contained while we make meals, etc. The other PnP that we had in our bedroom when he was little is now at my mom's house for when we visit.
We could not live without it. I was worried about the flat head reviews, but I just put some prefolds in between the cover and the metal plate to cushion DD's head. It's not any harder than when she lays on the crib mattress, the playmat on the floor, etc.She has no head or neck issues.
She slept in it (next to our bed) for probably the first 6 weeks of her life. She now bedshares with us, but she still uses it for naptime. She is not a sound sleeper, so my mom puts her in there for naps and she can rock DD when she starts to fidget, and usually get another hour out of her. I dread moving her to the crib for naps since I don't know how she's ever going to get past that first 25 minutes when she fusses so much, if she's not being rocked, she wakes up....
Love, love, LOVE the RnP. We had the old version and she slept in it at night exclusively (next to our bed). She slept in it probably until she was two months old and then we transitioned her to her crib. We never had problems with a flat spot although the reviews initially had concerned me. I think that if your baby doesn't move very much, you're going to get a flat spot no matter what you're in but she was in and out of it all the time, especially with breastfeeding.
I think it was a bit like being in the womb and not so big as the pack n play or the crib. We swaddled her in it and, honestly, she slept the best during the first month or so of her life.
Looking at the newer model, i'm not so sure if i would get it. Like you, i'm a complete freak when it comes to sleeping and I guess i'd worry about those pillows around the baby's head.
We had the old model and loved it.
The first night in the RNP, LO slept for 4 or 5 hours straight. It was magical. We kept him in it until 3 or 4 months when we transitioned him to the crib.
I'm in the same boat, it wasn't around for DD and I wish it were. DD had awful reflux and caught a few colds when she was under 3 mo. We were supposed to have her sleep upright, but nothing really worked well and she'd end up smooshed dangerously in the corner of the basinnette.
I found the "old" style of RNP on diapers.com for $46 for DS just in case he ends up with reflux as well, and even if he doesn't I'll probably keep in by our bed in the RNP.
Re: the reviews about flat heads...this can happen in any sleeping situation or be attributed to other things (i.e., the kids head would be flat no matter where they slept.) I remember our Pedi always telling us the importance of a) tummy time and b) making sure that we alternated which side of her head she was laying on to help avoid these spots. I honestly (perhaps a bit unfairly) wrote those few reviews off as ignorance on the topic. But I am not worried about it.
