talk to me about gestational diabetes...

Hi all!

My husband and I are thinking of starting a family soon and I have a concern. A few years ago I was diagnosed as "pre-diabetic" by my PCP. No one ever believes me because I am fit and generally eat healthfully, but yes -- my blood sugar levels were abnormally high (fasting blood test), so the doc and I came up with a game plan to get them in check. After a year, I was able to lower my blood sugar to a more respectable level and, though I'm still on the doc's "watch list," I'm in a much better state.

BUT, it turns out, watching my blood sugar is now something that I have to think about all the time. When I lapse and eat a lot of sweets or starches that cause my blood sugar to spike, there are some obvious signs. I sweat at night, I have to go to the bathroom a lot... etc. So I tend to think that it's going to be a lifelong issue that I have to keep an eye on.

SO -- I've read about gestational diabetes and, having had a few friends recently go for their glucose tests it's recently on my mind. I'm getting worried that I'll be predisposed to it because I already have these blood sugar issues. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there anything I can be doing now, prior to conception, to prevent it from happening to me?

 Thanks for your advice!

  • You may have better luck getting a reply on the high risk board. It is more active and there are lots of GD ladies there. Good luck!

  • There really isn't anything you can do to prevent it.  I didn't have GD with my first but did with my second.  It just happens...
