Middle is recommended first, but check your car's user manual, too. Some cars don't recommend the middle seat. Between the car's user manual and the car seat installation guide, they should point you in the right direction of where to install it.

Also check if your local police or fire station does car safety seat checks. I just can back from mine it he told us soooooo much more than what was in the manual, in a book or the random tidbits from friends and family.

This, I took our car to the police station for a safety check. Put my mind at ease. He recommended to do the back middle. In case there is an accident of some sort and the car is side swiped, the baby is more protected in the middle than on either side.

We did middle (with hyundai sonata) - even though our manual didn't SAY - but shows a picture of one in the middle. We have side air bags, so I'm assuming that must be what they recommend then.
Back middle is safest as PP's said but if you can't do that go behind the driver. If there ever was an accident, the natural instinct is to protect the driver so that apparently is the 2nd safest option.
Try for the middle, but remember you will probably have to use the seat belt. Most cars don't have 3 sets of LATCH connectors and you can't use one from each side.
