How late do you have to be before OB will induce?

Have they talked about it with you yet? I'm wondering what blanket policies there are for induction. Not that I want to be induced, of course would love for it to just happen on it's own, but curious...

Re: How late do you have to be before OB will induce?

  • I'm 2 days overdue and my doctor says she's willing to go 41 weeks and then talk induction, but she (and I) are both hoping it happens on its own before that!

  • My OB said if I make it to 41 weeks we will induce sometime within that week.

  • I am 39 weeks and 4 days tomorrow and will be induced tomorrow morning.  Once you get to 39 weeks my doctor lets  you induce if you want.

  • mine waits 10 days!

  • I have heard between a week to ten days beyond the due date is an average.  Two weeks and beyond could make for labor complications.  I suspect the doctor takes measurements just to make sure the baby is a safe size for delivery.
  • Past 41 weeks but they will let you go to 42 and beyond if you are comfortable with that.

  • My midwife goes 10 days post due date and then you can induce or get monitored if you prefer not to induce. Remember you are in charge and if you don't want to induce consider asking for monitoring instead.

  • My doc says he at least waits until week 39 (unless medically necessary). He also told me I have an unfavorable cervix and if we induce I have about a 50% chance of needing a c-section in the end. So I'm ok with waiting until week 41 ;)

  • My midwife waits until 41 weeks. But once you go past your due date she does twice weekly NSTs and office visits to make sure the placenta is still working.

  • I'm inducing this Thursday at 39 weeks 6 days.  My doctor said that my cervix is dilated and effaced enough that we should be all good!  I was at 2 with 70% effacement as of last week.  I think it just depends on the doctor and on how you are progressing.  I would much rather go on my own, but the only other date to induce was 6 days over my due date and I didn't want to go that far over if I didn't have to!

  • Mine waits until 41 weeks and then talks induction, but will also let you go longer if you want, as long as everything is looking alright.  She did already schedule me an appointment for a couple days after my EDD to do a membrane sweep in case things were moving slowly.

  • MIne said she's let us go a week over due, but then she typically induces.  She mentioned if you were "favoriable" she considers inducing starting at 39 weeks depending on the situation.  But she did then go on to say that inducing can lead to a c-section and she has the lowest c-section rate in her practice.  (In other words- i think she prefers not to induce, but will listen to the mom's needs/desires with-in reason.)

  • 42 weeks for mine - but if I go that long, I have to give birth at the hospital instead of my birthing center :(

  • My OB wants to look at 41 and a half weeks for an induction (and her practice doesn't really let women go past 42wks) -- I'm resisting that, but agreeing to the NSTs and u/s and whatnot she wants me to have twice a week between 40wks and delivery. If there's an actual medical need for an induction, then sure. Otherwise, no.

  • With my son they were talking about inducing me at 42 weeks, although that was contingent on the results of the NST I was scheduled for the day my son was born. They sounded like they were willing to go longer if everything looked good on the NST.

This time around I"m seeing a midwife and no mention has been made of induction. I don't know what they would recommend.

  • Sometime during week 41.

  • I asked my OB at my 36 week appointment because I was curious. They won't induce for being overdue until 41 weeks.

This, but I'll be pushing for 43 weeks if an induction isn't medically necessary.

    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • 42 weeks to the day they schedule an induction.

  • My doctor will induce me on my due date!  YAY!!   Went today and we scheduled it just in case.  But I'm really hoping this kid comes way before 2/22.

My GD has been very managable and there haven't been any issues, but he'd rather be safe than push it.

  • I just asked at my appt and they said that they do it anywhere between 41 and 42 weeks, depending on the preference of the patient.  They're willing to go past 42 weeks with lots of monitoring if a patient really wanted to.
  • My MW does not suggest inductions for date reasons.  I had my first at 43 weeks (with lots of monitoring in the last week or so), so I am happy to go at least until then.  I am not sure what I would do if she went past then, but the odds of that are very small, so I am not worrying about it.

  • I don't know about my OB specifically, but the nurse at the prenatal class for the hospital said that most doctors will not let the pregnancy go past 41 weeks.

  • I'll find out today what my midwife says but mentally I don't think that I can go past 41weeks, and thats not even taking into account how I feel physically because this girl is just getting too big.

  • My doctor has not mentioned inductions at all. At my last appt on Monday, my NP told me that if I make it to my next appointment (on my EDD) then the doctor may start talking to me about scheduling non-stress tests to check on LO and make sure he's doing well. But no mention of needing to discuss induction so far.

  • my dr will induce at 41 wks...hopefully it won't come to that!

  • My OB will induce at 39 weeks if I want, but she hasn't brought up anything about how late she will let me go before she recommends it.
