First time with a house cleaner yesterday!

I got my house cleaned yesterday by my new cleaning lady.  I've never hired out cleaning, because it seemed ridiculous to me to pay so much for something I could do myself.  But I've been going through a rough time, and I needed to do something to eliminate some stress from my life.  Enter Amy!  Stick out tongue

She cleaned things I've NEVER cleaned in the entire time we've lived here.  My house has never been so clean!  It's amazing!  And to think that she's going to be here every 2 weeks... my heart is a-flutter.  LOL.

It's really hard to justify the expense.  We are working on a lot of savings and financial goals because we suck in that area.  But there are other areas I'd cut back before cutting this one.  It's seriously the most amazing thing ever.

Sometimes being a working mom can suck... but there are some perks.  Big Smile  I think we're going to hire someone to do our lawn this summer, too...

Re: First time with a house cleaner yesterday!

  • We have been tossing around the idea of hiring a cleaning lady and I am thinking we may need to look into this further!

Keeping up on the minor things like dishes and laundry is no big deal, but it's tough to find the time to do the "heavy" cleaning that needs to be done periodically.

  • So jealous! We have been talking about it for ages, but you have inspired me to get off my butt and call some services. Thank you!

  • So jealous!  Good for you!!  We're planning on doing the same thing once my husband is done with grad school and gets a job.  Spending time with family is way more important than spending time with the toilets.

This is exactly how we are.  We SUCK at doing things like cleaning the floors.  Vacuuming and sweeping, sure, we do it all the time.  Mopping?  Yeah, like once every 2 months... and that's with a Swiffer.  Embarrassed

    She cleaned:

    • Light fixtures and ceiling fans
    • Base boards
    • Underneath furniture
    • The furniture itself (under cushions and such)
    • Appliances (including inside the microwave!)

That is in addition to the "normal" cleaning (bath tubs, counter tops, sinks, floors, etc.).

    I think I love her.

This is totally what we need. It's shameful to think of the last time we cleaned things like the light fixtures/fans.

  • Is it incredibly awful of me to say that i'm a SAHM and have considered hiring someone to come like once a month??

DH and I were just talking about this. I can keep this house to where if we had an unexpected visitor, they wouldn't run out of here screaming all while dialing child services, but i admittedly suck when it comes to the deep cleaning. I haven't touched the light fixtures since before DS was born!

I feel bad because I do stay home and only mildly help with our business now that DS is here. But someone coming in once a month to do the deep cleaning would be absolutely wonderful. I haven't figured out how to scrub the shower and entertain DS at the same time. If my mom or MIL stop by I usually hand over DS and run to get laundry put away or a room tidy.

I'll just say it, I've never been a neat freak and I'm honestly "not good" at cleaning house. My mom can clean her place and it sparkels. I can clean all day and it just looks like i've stacked stuff into piles. One thing is clutter. I seriously need some bookshelves.

Okay this has turned into something entirely different!

Not at all.  It's not easy to devote a good chunk of time to cleaning the house when you have a baby to look after!  Our house cleaner is here for 5 hours, and she works HARD.  Plus, she's way more efficient than I am... it would take me twice as much time to do what she does.  No way you could do that with a baby.

  • I just used a cleaning lady for the first time last week, it was amazing to walk into a clean house.  Peyton wants to be held all day and I could not stand to look at the mess any longer.  I had fallen behind on so many things.  I honestly feel like a new person and can not wait until she come back again!

  • Oh, I am jealous! I need a cleaning lady so desperately. PP, I SAH too, and I still need one!  Maybe with our tax return we can get someone. I feel like if I got it under control once, we could maybe manage it? Or you know, call her again in a few months when we don't ;)
  • Oh this sounds awesome. Please send me magic Amy's info. I promise I won't steal her :) I only need like 4 hours every other week...

Ditto to nearly all of this.

I SAH but definitely have considered getting someone for a once a month thing. We could afford it, but I still have a hard time justifying what is an "unnecessary expense." I don't know why though. I don't have a hard time justifying eating out when I'm too tired for cooking, or when I simply don't want to mess up the kitchen I just cleaned. So why not pay for some cleaning? I bet it would make me happier than a meal out, or even new shoes!

OP- Were you there while she cleaned, or were you gone? Just wondering how that works.

I asked her about this, and she said her schedule was full and she isn't taking new clients. :( She may be this summer, but not right now. I then asked if she could recommend someone, and she says although she knows some people, she wouldn't recommend them. Sorry!! :(

I was at work, but she does have some clients who are home while she cleans.

Thanks for asking. I laughed a little when I read that she wouldn't recommend the people she knows. At least she is honest :)

How did you find her? I am nervous to just have someone come to our house.

  • She's my coworker's wife. I was nervous about using some random person too....she has my house key and my security system code, after all!

Im a SAHM too, and once our LO came along and I quit my job, I realized more than ever how much I need my house cleaner! We dropped cable TV, and would cut other things if we had to, before we would get rid of her!
