VBAC

Vbac induction question?

I live about an hour and a half away from the hospital where the vbac will be preformed so my dr wants to do a pitocin induction. I have read that this is associated with a 29% increased chance of uterine rupture. I am a little worried by this fact. Please tell me your stories/thoughts/facts or things you have heard about this. Thanks I really appreciate boards like this one.

Re: Vbac induction question?

  • I havent heard of this. My dr won't do an induction.  NO pitocin.

  • I would be comfortable trying a gentle Pit induction.  There are studies finding that it is safe.  Even with that 29% increase, you are still talking low numbers.

Induction in general decreases your chance of a successful VBAC, although it is  certainly still possible. How much did you dilate before your cesarean?  How do you feel about not being induced and just hopping in your car at the first sign of labor?

  • I had a foley bulb/pit induction.

I was already in early labor---at 2 and 90%. It was successful and an awesome experience.

I thought for sure I wouldn't be ok with an induction but my body just needed a small kick over into active labor. The pitocin did just that. I certainly wouldn't be induced at zero but for a small push? Sure. It's all about what you and your doctor are comfortable with.

  • My first pregnancy I dilated to 6 cm. I have also thought about jumping in the car at the first sign of labor but I did dilate pretty quickly with my son....

  • I had a successful pit VBAC induction.  You'll see a few posts down someone mentioning the latest research article has noted that there is no noticabl increase in rupture risk in a pit induction if it is done correctly.

  • My midwife won't do a pit induction. Ds2 has to come on his own!

  • I had my first vbacn12 years ago at 41 wks 3 d and they used cervadil.
  • I would really prefer to start labor on my own, but if I get to 41wks (their cut off) and my cervix is favorable, I'm willing to try a little pit and/or the foley bulb.

Personally, I would not be worried about an hour and a half drive to the hospital.  But, it took me 59 hours to dilate to 10, so I don't need to get anywhere quickly.

Careful with that assumption.  I thought the same thing and came close to having an unassisted delivery because of how fast things went the second time.  I was in second stage labor by the time I realized yes, this is happening! :)

  • I also had a successful foley bulb/pitocin induction that was done at 42 weeks.  My midwives do this often and consider it safe.  I did labor for 37 hours but that is not the norm and hopefully will go more smoothly for you.

  • my dr won't induce so im hoping everything goes naturally because she doesnt want me going over 40 weeks either :(  im gonna be doing all the nutty things out there to try to make myself go into labor when the time comes :)

  • First off, I wouldn't do an induction because you live 1.5 hours away. Unless you are comfortable with that.

That being said, I lived 3 hours away from my hospital and did a foley induction. Mine was because of BP issues. Call me crazy, but I had planned on laboring in the car for 3 hours. The foley made me go into labor and once I was in labor they started the pit. I'm not sure how I would feel about just starting pit without any contractions.

FWIW, my OB said if you can get to 4cm, the risk of rupture is pretty much over. (I'm not sure where that stat came from though). Which is why he started the pit once I made it to 4cm.

    HTH and good luck!

I can't even think that I would be that lucky.  And in reality, I'm super close to the hospital.

This is my wildest dream (well, kinda).  After 60 hours of back labor it seems only fair :)

  • I had pitocin to induce labor at 41 weeks. I was on it for 10 hours. They would not use cervadil but used a foley catheter instead.

  • I think the red flag here is that your doc wants to do an induction solely based on the fact that you live farther away. I'd say that you'd be fine going in when your labor starts. I think that is not a very good reason to do a pitocin induction, especially with VBAC.

  • My Dr will not do an induction ... didn't ask why though... they just say they cannot do one since I've already had a c-sec.
