What do I feed an 8 month old after Cheerios?

I know that I've already had one kid go through this stage but somehow I forget certain things. DD#2 has been successfully eating Cheerios and puffs for at least a month. When I try to feed her puree, she doesn't seem very interested but she loves self-feeding with the Cheerios.

Last night, I had a revelation that I need to start offering her more finger foods (ding ding ding). But, I realized that part of my hesitation is that can't remember ideas of foods to start with and I'm afraid she's going to choke.

So, my question is what finger foods should I start out with? I was thinking tonight I would try peas and corn but what other options do I try after that?

Re: What do I feed an 8 month old after Cheerios?

  • bite sized pieces of avocado

    beans (lightly smashed)

bite sized pieces of roasted squash/zucchini

    bite sized pieces of banana

    pasta

    tofu

    blueberries (cut open)

shredded cheese or soft cheese like cottage cheese (this is messy, but funny!)

  • I was really amazed how much J was able to eat without teeth.  Here are some of the things we did:

bananas - I cut them in kind of thick semi-circles (so half a slice) that way I could stand it up on the tray and it was easier for J to pick up. Someone here also recommended rolling it in crushed cheerios for added grip.

sweet potato - we just put one in the oven after he goes to bed and then cut it into small cubes, it will last about a week.

slightly smushed peas - I just crushed each one it a little so it wouldn't roll around

scrambled eggs, with milk, cheese, and sometimes broccoli mixed in (our pedi said we didn't need to wait until 1 year on eggs, but some do).

avocado, strawberries, kiwi, slightly smushed parts of grapes without the skin, the floret part of well-cooked broccolli or cauliflower, whole wheat pasta (the spirals since they were easier to pick up), whole wheat bread with a little cream cheese or peanut butter.

    I can't believe she's so big already!

  • We did/do blueberries, cheese, squash, sweet potatoes, bananas.  We cut everything, including the blueberries, into small pieces.  I do think DD was older than 8 months before we started a lot of these, but bananas and squash would be a good start.  For the squash I found the most amazing thing at Whole Foods.  It's organic squash in a bag you can steam in the microwave.  It's already cut!  It's one of our go to foods because it's so easy and DD loves it.

ETA:  We did egg yolks around that time too.  To scramble them I found it helped to add a little water.  We held off on whole eggs until very close to a year for allergy concerns.  And ditto avocado!  DD was eating that early on.

  • You've already got a bunch of great ideas, so I will just let you know that someone said to me "beans and breakfast" are next when I was wondering.  So, black beans, kidney beans, baked beans and then eggs, oatmeal, fruit, etc.

FWIW, even though my 2 kids are very close in age, when it came time to start solids with DS, I totally forgot what I was doing.  Embarrassed

  • sprout really liked *very* soft carrots (cubed, obviously) in addition to everything else already mentioned.
  • Thanks ladies for all of the ideas. I forgot about bananas, sweet potatoes, and some of the other soft foods like that. I was just forgetting what to start with because I have a strong fear of her choking. But when I think about some of these soft foods, if they are chopped up really small, it should be okay. I need to just get over the hump and see that she can do it. I think she's totally ready.

BirdGirl - I know what you are talking about with that squash (I've seen those bags but never bought them). That's a great idea.

NicoNiko - I know. It's really amazing to me how much we forget in just a short amount of time.

umdbride - I know, she's getting so big. She's crawling all over the place and trying to pull up on things. It's pretty funny to see the girls interact. For instance, DD#1 will be building some legos and DD#2 crawls over and she is like Godzilla tearing down DD#1's building. It's really funny to watch. I think DD#2 is learning that she's no longer just a tiny little baby that will be happy sitting in the bouncy seat.

  • We did soft versions of all the different purees he was eating (cubed sweet potato fries were always popular) and then eventually just tiny pieces of whatever we were eating for dinner, including chicken. We didn't do cheese because he had a dairy issue, but that would have been another thing to try.

haha, that is too cute! and amazingly fast - J is pretty content to just crawl and pull up on stuff, he has no desire to cruise the furniture or walk with us holding his hands - he doesn't even try to stand up in his crib, lol.  good luck with the foods, I'm sure she'll do great! I forgot to mention, when we started on meats I gave him beef stew and pot roast since they were so tender and he loved both. My rule of thumb was if I could squish it with my fingers then he could try it :)

  • Guinevere is a big fan of blueberry waffles, broccoli, zucchini, sweet potato, spaghetti squash and pasta - all cut up in small pieces.

Assuming whatever I'm eating isn't spicy or has salt, I've just been cutting up small bits of my dinner for her, and she devours everything!  I find this stage so fun :)
