Who's starting cereal soon or who has started already?

DD loves to eat her ba-bas and i'm thinking she's ready to try some rice cereal.  I wanted to wait till after 4months but she seems ready now.  Plus she spits up a ton so i'm thinking maybe she'd keep cereal down better?

  • We started about a week ago with 1/4 teaspoon feedings every other night and 1/2 teaspoon in her evening bottle. But we use oatmeal cereal not rice. It's going fairly well. She is spitting up less and still has no idea what to do with the spoon or food that we put in her mouth but its a start. We spoke to our pedi before hand though. She was born on Oct 20

I'd be so happy if DD spits up less w/ solids.  The pedi. did mention that we could start solids at 4months when we went for her 2m visit.

I remember DS not liking rice cereal but he did like oatmeal better.

  • We have been trying some bananas with Natalie. She seems to like them even though most of it ends up on her face.

  • We started rice cereal at 2 months after our pedi said it was fine. He only gets 1 Tbs. in 4 oz of formula per day right now. This last weekend another Dr asked if he was on solids yet. Aside from the tiny bit of cereal the answer is no. Thinking of starting more cereal within a few weeks after he recovers from his bronchiolitis.

oh no, bronchiolitis.  DS had that at 4months too!  Hope he feels better soon.

I am afraid the rice will give her constipation. And she still spits up during the day, just much less at night. Her daycare provider said she went thru 3 shirts yesterday, my daughter only went thru 2 outfits and 3 buns...she is also a serious drooler.

I can't wait for avocados and bananas. It might be months away but we will see what happens.

  • We're waiting until 6 mos for solids as per my pediatrician's recommendation.  She said B is doing just fine on the BM.  Growing well, not spitting and sleeping good, so we can proceed as we have been.

Sounds like my DD.  i can't tell you how many bibs/clothes etc. that we all go through during the day.  I'm hoping the end of spit up is in sight soon!

  • Our pedi recommended waiting until she was 5.5-6 months old. We will try oatmeal cereal then. I'm not in any rush to start.

With DS we started right at 4 months and he did great on oatmeal cereal.

We're waiting till 6 months to introduce any solids per recommendation by the WHO and the Canadian Pediatric Society. I don't like the idea of something with very little nutritional value taking the place of BM. In fact, we'll probably skip cereals altogether and go straight to veggies and fruits.
We are doing exactly the same. The American Association of Pediatrics also recommends 6 months, so that's when we plan to start. If he wasn't thriving on BM alone, we would start earlier, but he's doing well.

  • A. had his 4 months shots yesterday and his doc told me that we should start solids in the next 2 to 4 weeks. My choice when exactly. He made a point in saying to start on cereal, but he doesn't recommend rice cereal since it is useless. Sounds good to me. A. has been really interested in us eating food. So I guess it is worth a try. And if he's not into it, we'll wait a bit and then try again.

    This is what we're doing.

  • The pedi said we could start with cereal. DD is only in the 10th percentile for her weight, and she said she would probably start putting on weight with the cereal. I'm going to try oatmeal though instead of rice.

This for us, too, except we probably won't start with veggies and fruits.  Public Health unit says that new research suggests that iron is super-important and to use iron-fortified cereals or other iron-rich foods like beef, chicken, tofu, egg, etc. to start.

Oh, tofu is a good option! I forgot about that. I think lentils are a good first food too. Especially if you want to do purees, since you can get them the same texture and they have a TON of iron.

  • We've already started with rice cereal per our pedi. I think since our little guy is so small they want him to be good and ready to really start eating solids by the time 6mths rolls around. That combined with his somewhat mild case of reflux I think made the recommendation simple.

So far, he takes very little of it, but he starting to swallow it. In some ways it's been helpful - I'm having serious supply issues (you name it, I've tried it, trust me) and was going to run out of my fairly large freezer stash within weeks. We're mixing the cereal with formula and it's actually getting him used to the taste of it, which has made introducing a BM/formula mix at bedtime much easier.
