LOs with ear infections **update**

Quick background for those that don't know. J got sent home week before last with ear infection and got sent home from DC last week with a virus. I took him to the dr and she said that the meds worked and his ears were clear.

This weekend, I noticed a foul smell when I was holding him. I smelled his clothes to make sure they were sour or anything, checked his diaper, smelled him (hair, under neck, arms everything) and I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from. Finally, when he turned his head I got another whiff and I realized the smell was coming from his ear. So I smelled the other ear and it had the same foul smell. That night I gave him a really good bath and cleaned his ears out and I noticed it again yesterday and this morning.

Have any of you experienced this before? Do I need to call his pedi or is it just the infection leaving?

**J's pedi said that his ears looked perfect. He said that wax could cause a foul smell but that it was fine if it did. He checked and there wasn't a lot of wax built up and there was also no sign that he's even had an ear infection. He basically said that the dr that diagnosed him with DEI wasn't right and it he probably had the stomach flu like I thought.**

  • We've been around the ear infection block a few times!  :-)  Yes, definitely give the pedi a call.  You may be getting discharge that you can smell but maybe isn't coming out enough for you to see well.  Either way, it's very, very possible he has another one particularly if you say he just had a virus.  With us, if he had an ear infection that the meds cleared but there was still residual fluid in his ears and he caught a cold after then, bam, a whole other ear infection.  Blech, I hate this for you and LO.  Keep us posted.

I was hoping you would reply because I knew your LO has had a time with those ears. They didn't give him any drops for his ears just an antibiotic so I know it's not the smell of medicine. DC just called and he's sick again so I'm gonna have to call the pedi anyway. I'll just mention this to them and see what they think. Thanks!

  • A couple times with the infections, I noticed C's breath almost had a weird smell too that I'm not sure was from the meds.  Since they kind of go hand in hand with colds though, it might have just been the congestion.

Either way, if it is another ear infection, ask your pedi about the guidelines now for how many they are allowed to have.  My pedi said 6 in 6 months but you can get a referral sooner if they are chronic.  When we got to the ENT, they actually said 4 so I guess opinions differ a bit.  Hopefully J's will clear easily but just wanted to give you the heads up if you need it!

Thanks! I'm a FTM so this is all so new to me still lol. I'll be sure to discuss that with him if it is another EI
