Abnormal Sequential Screen Results

My doctor just called with my sequential screen results, and said chromosome-wise, everything is fine with the baby, but my test results for serum levels put me at higher risk for complications with this pregnancy, including high blood pressure and problems with the baby's growth. I'll have to be monitored more closely, including more appointments and more ultrasounds to make sure the baby is getting big enough and growth is on track.

I'm already getting extra appointments and ultrasounds because I had a LEEP 4 years ago, so it looks like I'll be spending a lot of time at the doctor's office.

Anyone deal with this? Reassure me! I was too thrown when the doctor called to think of any questions, but I've got an appointment again in a week and a half.

Re: Abnormal Sequential Screen Results

  • I had a lot of extra monitoring for low blood pressure, placenta issues and cervical length issues and while it was a lot of appointments, I did get a lot of attention.

In the end, DD was perfectly okay and it was nice to see her weekly :-)

let me know if you have any questions.

  • I had a LEEP procedure about 6 years prior to getting pregnant, and my doctor said it would be fine (and it was).  From what I've read and what my doctor indicated, the women that have pregnancy complications related to LEEP or Cone procedures most often had their procedures done a few months or a year before getting pregnant.  Your body has had a few years to heal from the procedure, so try not to let that concern you.

  • I didn't get abnormal results from my b/w, but did get them at my anatomy scan. DD had two soft markers for chromosomal abnormalities (chroid plexus cyst and single umbilical artery). The dr's weren't all that concerned, and she did get some extra monitoring and a fetal echocardiogram due to the SUA b/c it can cause growth issues. And, like you, I was already beign monitored a lot but in my case it was due to it being twins and cervical issues. So, I was at the dr's a lot.

In any case, I wouldn't worry too much, especially if your dr's aren't too worried. I know that's easier said than done. I worried about DD everyday until the moment I saw her in the delivery room and saw she was okay. I now realize how much time I wasted worrying while I was pregnant instead of enjoying it.

  • I had extra monitoring with Molly too.  When our amnio came back fine they still increased my u/s appts to keep an eye on things since they said the higher protein levels could be indicative of something else being wrong.  I got a fetal echocardiogram to check for heart defects and then just extra u/s appts.  They kept an eye on my amniotic fluid levels which were high and kept thinking I had GD until they kept checking my results and seeing how they weren't even close to borderline.  Also they so overestimated Molly's size and thought she was going to be 9lbs which was why they kept thinking GD but she was 7lbs 7oz - totally normal sized for 39 weeks - but I did have a ton of fluid according to my OB during he C-section (repeat, less than 2 years b/w pregnancies so they didn't give me a VBAC choice).

Just ask what they are checking for and how often your appts will be.  If you are extra worried ask them for your chances of anything else being wrong to help reassure yourself that this is just standard for anyone who has some wonky results from the testing.  For us they told me that they really did not expect to find anything wrong but they want to cover all bases so we could be prepared - like if there was heart defect we could be prepared for extra hospital time or something like that.

  • Thanks for your stories. After talking to a doctor friend, it sounds like what they are worried about is low PAPP-A, which can indicate problems with the placenta, the outcome of which can be intrauterine growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, and premature delivery.
  • I had a LEEP in 2006 and gave birth to DS in 2010. They said it might take longer for my cervix to dilate during labor.

But I progressed pretty rapidly and DS was born after only 10 hours or so of labor.

I'm sure everything will be ok.
