What brand of probiotics do you recommend? I'd like to get Will started on them ASAP since he's now on an antibiotic. He doesn't really care for yogurt.

Thanks!

  • we used endomune for awhile based on the rec of our pedi
  • We have used EndoMune Junior. It is a powder that you keep in the fridge. We have put it in soft foods like applesauce and also used it in milk/water.
  • Question about probiotics - do you give them concurrent with anti-biotics? Or after the course of treatment?

Where do you get it? I really don't want to drive far today if I can avoid it! :)

  • I know Sprouts carries a kind specifically for children, but I can't remember what it's called right now.  But usually the people that work there are pretty knowledgeable about them - maybe they can help if you're close to one.

  • A either got it at Walgreens or the Buda Drug Store. I know the latter doesn't help you, but he didn't answer his phone.

ETA: Sorry meant to quote Libby on that one.

  • Thanks everyone! I'll have DH pick some up on his way home :)

The way I understand it, you take them together.

Concurent with for sure. DS also gets them on a regular basis, but I increase the amt if he's on abx. He's never had diarrhea during abx usage, to which I credit probiotics.

  • We use Baby Jarro-Dophilus.  I got it at whole foods in the refrigerated vitamin/supplement area.  DD has been on tons of antibiotics because of ear infections and UTIs and I think it has really helped.

  • Right now the kids are taking Garden of Life kids probiotic, I got it online but I've seen other Garden of Life stuff at WF.

I've also used the Nature's Way kids probiotic (yellow cap, white bottom in the refrigerated probiotic section) from Natural Grocers or Whole Foods.

I haven't had a lot of luck finding good probioitic brands at HEB or drugstores, but maybe some have better selections.

  • MrsAJL- our pharmacist told us to give the probiotic about 2 hours after you give the antibiotic.
  • You need a live strain. Basically, if it doesn't need to be refrigerated, they aren't doing you much good. We used to use VSL from people's. I prefer probiotic (must be unpasturized so yogurt is usually a no go) foods. Water kefir, kombucha and homemade ferments are much much more effective. You can buy kombucha in the stores. Just give him a few teaspoons at a time. He will love it, it's sweet and fizzy and has billions of healthy bugs. Start slow and work your way up. Are you near p-ville at all?  I'll be out that way today. I have a ton of fermented carrots that are ready to go. You're welcome to a batch if you want to meet up. I'll be at OT Connection from 2-3.

For strep you can also do a raw garlic and honey tincture. Add a little fresh juice or kombucha and he will drink it right up. The garlic will help kill the strep and he will barely even taste it. Super kid friendly. Let me know if you want the recipe.

That makes sense. For some reason I had this feeling that giving probiotics and antibiotics simultaneously would be futile.

  • Antibiotics kill all the good and bacteria in the gut except candida albicans. If you've ever had an antibiotic or if you've been on hormonal birth control, it is highly likely you have yeast overgrowth. This leads to a compromised immune system and illness.

Can I keep you in my pocket?

Seriously, though- you should write a book.
