Hi VBAC friends...longtime lurker and now I guess I am here for real! I just found out I am pregnant with #2. Quite a shock! I had DD in June 2010, so I know that I am in a good time period for a potential VBAC. When I have done the VBAC calculator I rate at 77% chance of a VBAC. I labored for 2 hours with DD, but she had lodged her arm in the birth canal and they worried about dislocating her arm. Makes me mad that other interventions weren't tried but they did let me try my hardest to push her out. I also developed a high fever during labor (104) so I was definitely not at my best. My biggest concern is that I was 2 weeks late. I know doctors don't tend to let you go beyond 41 weeks with a VBAC.
My question is how to start the conversation with my OB. I have my heart set on VBAC but am also realistic. What types of questions should I ask? I know they are a practice that supports VBAC but I really want to know what that means for me.
I know people ask this question all the time but advice from women who have been through VBAC or even RCS is so so helpful. Thanks for your support!
Re: Newly Pregnant with #2
Start the conversation with your OB at the first appointment and be completely blunt--"I want to have a VBAC and want to know your opinions and policies now. If you aren't 100% supportive I will find another provider." Find out as much as you can about the practice, all of the doctors there (that you may see during prenatal visits and labor/delivery), and the hospital.
Here's a good list of questions to ask: https://vbacfacts.com/2009/06/06/interviewing-care-providers-questions-to-ask/
The book "The VBAC Companion" has a good list of questions for an OB, hospital and/or Midwife.
Congratulations on your second baby, happy and healthy 9 months!
