safest way to check cervix for preterm labor?

I'm feeling crampy and my midwives want to check to see if I'm dilating and do the FFN test because I started dilating at 33 weeks with my first pregnancy (daughter was born at 38 weeks 1 day). Is it safer (won't cause dilation/cervical changes) to check cervix manually with fingers or with an ultrasound (vaginal or abdominal)?

Re: safest way to check cervix for preterm labor?

  • not sure which is safer but my perinatologist checks it every time with a transvaginal ultrasound since 13 or so weeks (I am high risk since my pg before DD where I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix)

  • I was checked 3 times vaginally in L&D Friday (we already knew I was in preterm labor at that point) and once yesteray in my doctor's office.  I also had the FFN yesterday.

  • My OB doesnt want to do an FFN or a manual cervix check as some doctors think it can make you dilate more.. Not sure which way my MFM will do next Wed to check my cervix.
