Re: anyone elect NOT to do a NT scan?

  • We're not having an NT scan. I know we wouldn't want to pursue further tests because they are more invasive. And because nothing is 100 percent, I'm sure we'd end up worrying for no reason, or breathing a sigh of relief when we can't really be sure we should. I selfishly only considered an NT scan for the chance at an early u/s! But ultimately decided it was best we avoided it.

  • We also elected not to do any type of genetic testing. We decided that if a problem or complication arose, we'd cross that bridge when we got there.
  • Us. Wouldn't change anything....wouldn't abort. And at the a/s, they will be checking to be sure all is well also. Nothing against those who did or will, but it can cause stress (false positives), etc..

  • We opted out of the NT scan.

  • We won't be doing this scan either

  • We did it for DS, we are not for this PG. With DS, we had an elevated risk for NTD/Trisomy 18(per the associated bloddwork at 15w). Since we did not want an amnio, it led to much worry and heartache until we had the anatomy scan which ended up showing a healthy baby. This time, we'll just wait until the anatomy scan so see if there are any visible conditions that we can prepare for.
  • I'm not doing one and I didn't last time

  • We never have and honestly, in our group of friends, I don't know of anyone that has done it.

We just don't feel the need. We wouldn't end the pregnancy and anything serious would come up at the 20w u/s anyway. No reason to add extra stress and worry.

  • We opted out of the NT scan.  Don't want another reason to stress since I'm a stress bug anyways!

  • i decided with SO that screening and testing wouldnt change our mind on more evasive testing. A extra ultrasound would be nice but i can wait til the 20week ultrasound.

  • In my area and with my group of friends I don't know anyone who has done the genetic testing...  however, reading the boards here there are a lot of people who get them!  I oftentimes hear that people do it just to get a bonus ultrasound which just didn't sit right with me. It just isn't for me but it is a very personal decision.
  • I've seen a ton of people say they're not doing it. I am, selfishly, because I just want to see the baby. I'll have my blood drawn but there's no way we'll do any further testing due to risks.

  • Didn't with DD, but since this pregnancy is already high-risk we are. I think it's a personal decision everyone needs to make with their physician.
    BFP #1: m/c at 8 weeks; BFP #2: DD born 6/9/09; BFP #3 m/c at 5 weeks; BFP #4 m/c at 8 weeks, D&E; BFP #5 DS born 8/12/12
  • I did and am so glad I did! I have such peace now that the risk of down syndrome or the FRagile x is not there. Also, there are some things that can be helped by a shot in the womb. Getting that report was so calming but to each his own.
  • I just started a thread about this a week or so ago.  The NT scan wasn't even offered to me, I first heard of it on this board.  I declined any genetic testing with both my other kids and am doing so with this one too.  It's weird, I have a friend who is 37 and pregnant and she had never heard of it either when I mentioned it a few days ago.  Maybe it's just where we live (midwest).

All of this exactly!  We didn't have it done the last time, and we're not doing it this time either.

  • I wasn't even given a choice...This is my first pregnancy so I'm new to all of this and the dr's office told me when to schedule my next appointments and what they were for and I didn't even realize that it was an optional thing until reading that people opted out on these message boards. Oh well...too late now..I had mine on Friday and it was nice to see the baby bouncing around and hear that everything so far is measuring as it should.  Smile

  • We aren't either. I don't want to cause any extra worry and even if it did show something, we wouldn't abort. We decided we would cross that bridge if we came to it.

I live in the midwest, and it was offered to me.  I went back and forth on whether or not to do it, but ultimitely, I decided that it would be a good thing.  I have mine scheduled for Feb 16.  With my other 2, I'm not sure that NT scans were even done yet, but they had the quad screen blood test.  I had that done and was glad I did.  Plus, I have a niece with down syndrome so I don't think a DS diagnosis is the end of the world.  However, I would not want to be surprised with it at the birth.  I think it would be better to at least be somewhat prepared for it.  The other trisomies are even more serious.  I work in a children's hospital and see babies with these conditions all the time.  I'd definitely want to know - and NOT so that I could terminate it.  Just to be as prepared as I could.  As for false positives, I guess that's a risk I'm willing to take.
