Based on fertility friend, my luteal phase is about 9 days long. From what I have read online, anything shorter than 10 days (some docs also say 12 days) is considered a luteal phase defect. Does anyone have any experience with this? When I got pregnant with my son, I didn't chart or really keep track of anything, we just decided to wing it, and it took us about a year of unprotected sex. It was also untimed, so I think that is why it took so long. Anyway, since I didn't chart before, I really have no way of knowing if my luteal phase has always been only 9 days. (Sorry, now I'm rambling). I just want to know if anyone has had problems with this, and whether they tried any over the counter or natural remedies (B6, progesterone cream, etc.) I'd rather not go see my doctor until I try a few other things first. Any info would be fantastic. Thanks!
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
Re: Question about progesterone/luteal phase defect?
I'd give yourself another 2-3 cycles before you go worrying about LPD or anything. Last cycle you went off of OPks alone to come to the conclusion that your LP is short. See what you get with temping.
Good luck
Mine was usually 9 days when we were ttc and I was charting. I was prescribed prometrium and also took b6. I took the prometrium until 16 weeks. It always helped.
Thank you! I know its not as short as it could be, I'm just trying to do all that I can.
Your reply just gave me some serious hope--thanks!
Nothing to add, other than that I'm in the same boat. That's actually why I'm BBT-ing this month. My OPK and OV Watch results have me at a 9-10 day luteal phase--I'm trying to figure out if that's actually correct.
I'm adding B6 (along with extra B12, because they don't work correctly if not proportionate) this month. And green tea. Here's hoping it helps--I've heard good things...?
While I realize it's probably too early to jump to any conclusions, I figure the extra vitamins can't hurt. It's funny--I've actually had a problem with B vitamins my whole life--energy, metabolism, fatigue, etc. My doc when I was a teenager prescribed supplements, and again when I was just out of college. Guess they were on to something.
Sigh. I'm married to a doctor. One of these days I should start listening to mine!
Thanks for your reply, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think I might give the B vitamins a try, because, like you said, it can't hurt. Good luck to us!
With DS we got PG on our 1st cycle so now being on cycle #5 with TTC #2 it has been a wake up call for us. According to FF my LP on cycle #3 was only 10 days and cycle #4 it was only 9 days. I've tried green tea and drank more H2O (due to lack of CM), B6 to try to help my LP and am not getting anywhere..with anything. My dr is checking my progesterone this cycle at 7dpo. I'm not looking for a miracle...just looking for answers.
Temping will definitely give you a more clear picture. GL!!

You don't need to run out and get vitamin B6 for 1 or 2 cycles with a 9 or 10 day luteal phase (particularly if you aren't temping to confirm when you ovulated). If it's just your first or second cycle temping, keep at it another few months. Particularly if you recently stopped using hormonal birth control. It can take a while for your cycles to regulate.
If your LP is consistently in the 7-9 day range, call your OBGYN to discuss this rather than self-medicate on your own.
