D.C. Area Babies

Another intro and question :)

Hi,

I am another semi newbie/lurker and I thought today seems like a day that we're all introducing ourselves.  I'm Jen, and I'm 31 weeks pregnant, DH and I live in the Fair Oaks area. I also have a 15 year old stepdaughter, who is not really happy about the new LO about to happen, but she's getting there.

Question, if anyone has any experience with this: I have multiple herniated discs in my lower back.  Although the doc is a little concerned about the epidural, I am more concerned with possibly rupturing another (or further rupturing) disc.  I have horrible sciatic pain that I go to physical therapy for already and we are working on more exercises, but I was wondering if anyone has gone through this already?

thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Another intro and question :)

  • I had one bulging disk in my lower back (not sure if it was herniated... the details are foggy)  It was more of an annoyance pre-pregnancy than an excruciating problem.

The anesthesiologist had a little trouble placing my epidural - he "missed" the first time.  Said that my lower back was a little curved or something.  I'm not gonna lie, that first stick hurt like heck, but once it was in correctly, it was fine.

Strangely, sometime near the end of the pregnancy, all of my lower back pain vanished.  I haven't had a day of pain in 3 years.  I used to be stiff every morning, and have occasional days where my back was off.  (knock on wood).  I'm not sure whether it was coincidental, or whether it was related to the pregnancy - but, my theory is that the relaxin loosened my back up just enough to relieve pressure on the one messed up disk.  I could be wrong.  I haven't had it looked at in about 5 years.

  • not the same but I have scoliosis and was very worried about the epi. It took him a few (3-4) tries (ouch, in the middle of contrax) but eventually he got it in

  • Welcome to the board!

I have a herniated disc in my lower back, and I was also worried about it getting worse during pregnancy. Like chia, I was fine. But my back pain is one of those things that flares up every now and then, but it's not constant anymore, thank goodness. Labor and childbirth didn't make it worse, but my back wasn't in acute pain at the time. If anything, I would hope that your back would feel better after the baby is on the outside. I didn't get an epidural, so I can't speak about that aspect.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies! I talked to the doctor today, and they are leaving the c-section or VB up to me. Guess I will check in with the physical therapist and my neurosurgeon, see if they have some advice!
  • welcome! If you are contemplating surgery post-pregnancy, I can give you info on some local doctors (to use and to avoid). DH has had two spinal fusions (both failed) plus another lower back procedure (also, failed) and he is about to have everything re-done in March.
