Stupid question - receiving blankets

Clueless FTM with no mom friends here.

What exactly do receiving blankets do?  I assumed that they had something to do with delivery (to receive the baby), but I think I'm wrong there.

Do Adais & Aden (sp?) swaddle blankets count as receiving blankets, or do I need to register for something else?

Thanks!

Re: Stupid question - receiving blankets

  • I think 'receiving blanket' is just a general term for a lighter weight multi purpose blanket. You can wrap the baby in it, cover their legs in the carseat, cover the whole carseat (if it's cold out), lay on the floor for playtime, etc. I registered for the A&A ones to use for swaddling, but I also registered for several more just to use for those things mentioned above,,,

  • Yeah, we're going in w/ the mindset that they're all-purpose, and so registered and will buy a ton of them.  We already have a good number that are hand-me-downs.

  • We used the cheap receiving blankets (Gerber and Carter's sell them in 5 packs) as burp cloths or to use with the car seat.  A&A swaddle blankets are a lot more expensive and much nicer material, so we used those only for swaddling.

  • Swaddle blankets are much bigger.  We ended up with a zillion receiving blankets that I hardly ever used.  I think my main use was as a light blanket in the car, and as a cover for the changing table part of the PnP.  I liked actual burp cloths better for that use, and they aren't really big enough to use as a blanket on the floor.  I would have much rather had more swaddling blankets!
