Do I need the ergo infant insert? Is it safe?

We are expecting again and I would like to be able to use our ergo for the new baby. Do I really need the infant insert? I just checked out the instructions for it and it seems like the baby will just be all squished in there. Should I just wait a few months to use the ergo when he/she has better head control? Please share your experience. Thanks!

I loved mine. After a few months I just popped the pillow out and used that by itself (meaning I didn't use the wrap part that is also part of the insert). Some people say they roll up a blanket and use that instead to boost the baby up. It is pricey, but was worth it for us because it allowed us to use the Ergo from day one.

We've used our infant insert and like it. It keeps them all snug with their arms and legs in to simulate the womb. The only problem we've had is that LO and the wearer get really hot after awhile.

I loved our insert for the first 6 weeks or so, then I used just the pillow of the insert or a rolled up blanket if I was going somewhere I'd use the blanket until very recently.

We used the insert for the first six weeks and loved it. Now, I just sit DD2 on the little pillow that comes with the insert. DD2 was born in late Sept and the insert was not too warm during that time of year. If she had been born in the late spring or summer, I don't know if we could have used it. I would have been afraid that she would overheat.

We never bought the infant insert, because it was right in the middle of the transition from the old insert to the new one. We used only a ring sling and a wrap until my daughter was about 4 or 5 months old and then we used the Ergo.

I never felt comfortable using the Ergo without the insert while she was an infant.

We used the insert until DD had good head control, even though she was an infant in the summer. She was very long and her head would have flopped all over the place without the insert.
