How warm is your house (for little babies)

We normally keep our house at 62 at night and with the new baby we know that is too cold.  But now we all (DH, DS#1 and I) wake up drenched in sweat with the temp set to 68.  Do you just warm up your house when you have a wee little one or is there a solution that I"m not thinking of to keep the house cooler (and hopefully energy bill a bit lower)

He wears a sleep and play and is swaddled at night.

  • I keep our apartment between 68-72 because other wise I freeze and Edmund won't sleep. My H is a little on the warm side and sweats but he would much rather do that than have us freeze.

  • During the day, I keep it at about 68-69.  At night, we drop down to 64 I think.  All our bdrms. are upstairs where it is much warmer than what the thermostat measures downstairs.  Can you just add an extra layer to baby W?  I think we used to put Lucy in a onesie, fleecy pj's, then swaddle to keep her warmer.

  • We keep our house at 68 degrees at night... Another thought is to put a space heater in LO's room at night to have it warmer.

  • We live in an old, poorly insulated house.  It takes a lot to keep it warm $$$ so our thermostat is set low (embarassingly low - 55 when gone and at night, 62 when we're up and there).  BUT we heat our immediate area - cooking in the kitchen warms it up, we have a wood stove in our TV room but at night, in the bedrooms, we rely on extra covers (for the teens) and an electric blanket to pre-heat our bed for me.  I have a heating pad that pre-heats baby's bed (when he sleeps in it) but otherwise he's just snuggled up to me or under his blanket (he's mobile so the risk is low - I've talked to my pedi about it)

  • 66 at night, 68 during the day. Like you we were 62 at night, but the baby got too cold. I'll probably start dropping. Degree or two towards spring.

  • We keep it at 70 during the day, 68 at night. I think when the boys were babies we kept it at 70 for nighttime.  We were all warmer, plus it was spring/summer. M slept in lightweight jammies and D and I took off our duvet cover.

  • 65-66 at night and 68 during the day - no warmer. When Isa was a baby we warmed it up to about 67 at night and added an additional, thin layer. Onesie, socks, sleeper, light swaddle (Oct baby).

  • I keep it at 66 now at night for Anna. It's hard because Max's room is the warmest so he gets sweaty, I go in after he's asleep and fold the blanket back so he just has the sheet on his top half. If he's swaddled that will keep a lot of heat in so you might not need it as warm as you think. When I worked with parents around safe sleep our standard recommendation was 65-70.

Now that she's not swaddled I just layer Anna up--two long-sleeved onesies, socks, Baby Legs, footed jammies and fleece sleep sack.

  • I've been wondering this... we keep our house very much on the cool side and keeping it warmer would require a major effort (112 yo house), which we'll do if we need to... anyway, glad to see these answers!

  • Oi, we keep our house 71 all day.  I put it down to 65 when we are out and about, but heat it right back up when we get home.

K will not sleep if she's cold.  When she was tiny we did full sleeper pj's and double swaddle.  You can also throw a onesie under the jammies.  Now we do fleece pj's and warm blankie.  The kid despises the cold :(

You can also do a warm mist humidifier, we do that on really cold winter nights.

  • When our kids were little we did an undershirt then a footed PJ then swaddled. We keep our house at 65 during the night and 68 during the day.

  • You guys would roast in our house!  We keep our house at 73 all day and all night long!  And yes I pay a fortune in heating bills but I hate to be cold!
