Eating and hair

Is my child just messy or does everyone with girls have this problem?  She will feed herself but things inevitably end up in her hair, so we have to wash it as least once a day and I trying to clean gunk out of it at every meal.  A perfect example is yogurt, it ends up caked in her hair and we have to fight to clean it out.  Her hair isn't long enough for a ponytail and doing pigtails is a big fight and she will try to pull them out, so spreading the food to the back of her hair too.  Is there an easier solution?  Just cut all her hair off? : )

Re: Eating and hair

  • If her hair is not already in pigtails or ponytails, then she has to have it clipped back with a barrette. She doesn't love it, but it's just like wearing a bib - its just what happens when she eats.

  • Alex will purposely rub food in his hair and then yell TUB with a grin.  It drives me bonkers!  I had to stop feeding him yogurt before daycare.

  • Charlotte generally thinks of things like yogurt, banana and mac and cheese as hair product. It is a fight to clean it out, but I don't know how to get her to stop.

  • We clip one or both sides of Stella's hair back with a barett when she eats.  And even that doesn't always work.  Sometimes I have to wait until the food dries and brush it out of her hair (we have a soft baby brush).  I'm hoping it won't last forever!

Just wanted to add, the barrettes or ponytail wouldn't work for us, since she tends to grab at the back of her head, specifically behind her ears. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears!

Yeah that happens sometimes, too, lol!  I'm thinking a shower cap might be our solution!

  • The clips work for dd bc hers gets messy if she is brushing hair out of her eyes. Honestly, if it was being done on purpose bc she thought it was fun/funny or for a bath, dinner would be done immediately and she would probably get a time out or lose something she wanted - like if we were having dessert or a food she wanted.

I think if she was older, that would be our option, but I honestly don't think she understands what she is doing other than "I want to touch my hair so I am going to touch my hair." She isn't disobeying or doing it to get a rise out of us, she has always had this habit of running her hands through her hair. Tina - a shower cap doesn't sound like a bad option haha

Alright, well at least it's not just me.  She won't keep barrettes in either, but maybe if I have the food in front of her, then I could clip them in?  It's funny because yogurt, bananas, and mac and cheese are our 3 biggest food problems.

  • Not quite the same thing, but T hates all hair accessories, but will wear a barrette in her hair when brushing her teeth because she LOVES to brush her teeth.  So maybe start the barrette while she is eating something she loves, and increase it to every time she eats?
