My 3 yr old DS is just starting speech therapy through the school district. And I forgot to ask them after the evaluation if they do the services at our home or do we bring him somewhere... does anyone know? Also on average, how long did you child need the services for?
Thanks!
Re: Speech therapy thru the School District (WNY area)
At your child's age, most likely someone will come to your home unless your child is enrolled in a day care. Most providers work during school hours (8-3) so wherever your child is during that time, that's where services will be provided.
This has generally been our experience as well. At 2 when he initially qualified, he was still under the guise of EI, so we had a therapist come to our house once a week. At 3 (when he passed out of EI and got on an IEP through the district), we started taking him to a small group session in a local school. Then at 3.5, he started preschool in the district, where he continues to receive ST. If he had been bad enough (i.e. needing more significant help) when he turned 3, he would have skipped the small group session and entered the district preschool early to receive additional help.
I'd be surprised if they would send someone to your home, but I suppose each state/system is different.
at 3yo in my district a child who qualifies gets to go to early help preschool... EI is done in the home- but is done by the state- not through the school district...at least where I am.
