D.C. Area Babies

preschool recommendations please

We are moving to Northern Virginia in June, currently live in Hampton Roads. The areas we are looking at are Burke, West Springfield, Woodbridge, and Arlington. Can any of you recommend some good preschools in the areas I listed above or know of a site that has a list of school? Right now he is in a 3 day/3 hour program so I think I want to stick with that but maybe 4 days instead of 3. We are planning a trip in a few weeks to look at houses and hopefully preschools. Thanks in advance!

Re: preschool recommendations please

  • That's a huge area to cover.  Given the traffic in the area, I think you'll want to pick the place you live before you pick the preschool.  Woodbridge to Arlington could take you an hour+.  I just want to warn you that many/most preschools are holding their lotteries now for next year.  We've already put in our application for one preschool and gotten our waitlist spot.  Another preschool closed it's lottery this past Friday.  I am certain that you will be able to find a school, but given the timing you may want to focus on those schools that have availability once you know where you'll be living.

  • Check out the list at our-kids.com.  That's a really wide area to be looking so you may want to narrow down your location and then look for pre-schools.
  • I realize it's a large area but I was hoping people who live in one of those areas would be able to suggest some in that particular area. We haven't narrowed down the exact area because we haven't been up to figure out which area we like best but those are the ones we are looking at. I'm already freaking out about not being able to find one for him anywhere.
  • This is just a hunch, but I think you will find more availability the further from DC that you are.  There just seem to be more options.  We're struggling with preschool options right now b/c there just aren't that many within a reasonable distance from our house.  My sense from friends who are further from DC is that they have more options to pick from.

  • We really like our preschool, Trinity MOPS, in Alexandria.  They are very flexible with the options for different days, and it is 3 hours.  I have also heard good things about Westminster preschool and Fairlington Cooperative Preschool in the same area.  Like BirdGirl said, it can be quite tough to get into a spot around here and the lotteries are taking place right now.  Good luck!

Hi Angie - C is #2 on the waitlist for MOPS for next year.  I'm really hoping we get in.  If we do, I'll have some questions for you!

  • I replied to you on the preschool board re Woodbridge options. As a PP mentioned, it is much less competitive down here due to the distance from DC. We are quite happy with our selection, and I know that they had openings in mid-October this year, so if you don't find something in June, you might be able to slip in at the beginning of the school year. With a transient military population, slots will always be appearing.
