Bottle Woes.

How much trouble did you have getting your baby to take a bottle?  I'm wondering if we missed our window of opportunity.  Although I'm staying home for a while, it would still be nice if Eli would take a bottle every once in a while so I don't have to be attached to him 24/7.  We have Dr. Brown's bottles and 9 times out of 10 he won't eat.  I've tried to stay out of the way but it's hard when I can hear him screaming in frustration.  :-(  I tried switching the nipples to a slower flow (he was choking on Level 1), and while he doesn't seem to be choking anymore he still won't eat.

He doesn't like pacifiers either and I've tried a couple of different types.

I'm not sure whether to try a different type of bottle...I hate to spend money on all kinds of things that he's just going to refuse anyway.

Thoughts, opinions, ideas, previous experience?

Re: Bottle Woes.

  • Ugh that is so frustrating. I don't have any adivce - we introduced the bottle early on and managed to avoid this problem but we are going through something similar in trying to transition to a sippy cup. I think you are doing all of the right things in staying out of the room, switching nipples, etc. The only think I know to do is to just keep offering, Have you tried both giving a bottle before Eli is super hungry and when he is? Not sure in which situation he'd be more likely to go for it but just a thought. Good luck!

  • You haven't missed the window. Have you tried a different bottle? It took us 3 different bottles to find the one that he liked.

  • DD hated the playtex bottles we had, but she loved Tommee Tippee bottles.  It may be the shape of the nipple or the flow that he doesn't like.  DD wouldn't take a pacifier, either.  Target now has Tommee Tippee bottles.  Keep offering them - I think he will eventually take one.  It took quite a few times with DD before she was comfortable with the bottle over the breast.

  • I was going to recommend trying different bottles. That usually seems to be the issue. Maybe try the BreastFlow bottles, the nipples are more like the breast.

  • Thanks everyone!  I think I will end up buying a couple different types of bottles and see if we can find something he likes.  Here's hoping!
