The Staying Weight

During my pregnancy, I was on bedrest for 4 months and gained 45lbs. My daughter is 10weeks old, and I have not lost a pound since her birth even though I am breastfeeding. I am trying to stay within a sufficient calorie range to breastfeed (1800-2000 calories). I do toning workouts throughout the week. Has anyone else had/having this problem? Any suggestions? What worked for everyone else?

Re: The Staying Weight

  • I was in almost the same situation, except I gained a little more than you did. I was teeny pre-pg -- 5'2" and 112 lbs, and my body freaked out during pregnancy. I swear, I didn't go nuts with eating, and I gained 50 lbs, ended up on bedrest at the end, etc.

I started out walking while baby-wearing, then worked my way up to yoga/dance classes, and finally was able to run at four months post-pg. (When I weighed more, it hurt my knees too much to run.) I started out slow with jog-walking, and now my long runs are five miles.

My little guy turned 10 months old today, and I'm maybe 8 lbs over my pre-pg weight (if that), and I'm in better shape than I was pre-pg running-wise. I still have the mom tummy, but other than that, I'd say I'm about the same.

  • can you do any cardio? that in addition to toning should help. maybe 3-4 days a week for 30 minutes. i would also throw some weight training in there.  in the warm weaher its so nice because you can take baby for long walks :)

  • I'm in roughly the same boat in terms of weight gain and loss. I do cardio throughout the week as well as toning  and weightlifting though and still haven't lost much of my weight. I'm not really going to worry about it too much until the year mark or DD stops breastfeeding. I've heard that if a body thinks it is "starving" then it will keep the extra weight around simply for stores. This could easily be my problem as I have known food issues, so until DD weans I'm refusing to guilt myself about it.
