Baby Names

Is Ashley really a dated name?

I know Ashley was very popular back in the 90's but I really love the way it flows with the MN we have and our LN. WDYT? Honest opinions.

Re: Is Ashley really a dated name?

  • I don't think its SUPER dated. Still useable.

my SIL and i were lauging last night at some names people use to use that we just can't picture for a baby anymore..

    Pam,carol, donna, even crystal.

No offense to anyone who likes them, to each their own, but some names just sound sooo out of this generation to me.

  • I don't know, it is kind of dated but it's a great name and I personally love it.  I think if you really want to use it, you should.  It's still ranked in the 20's so you certainly wouldn't be the only person who still finds it useable and beautiful.

  • Funny how some names go "classic" and others go "dated".
  • I definitely think of it as dated. It will be a popular name for all of your daughter's friend's moms...kwim? It'd be like a child from our generation being a Barbara or a Sandra. It's not the worst.... but I wouldn't do it.
  • Yes, it was a popular 90's name, but I agree that it has a pretty ring to it.  I think I would smile if I met a little baby named Ashley.

  • I've never been a fan.  My 3-mo old niece is Ashley and when she was born, I thought "Hmmm...kind of 1988!" but now she's just Ashley and I don't think anything of it.  If you like it, use it.  I think Ashley Iris Stoll sounds good.

  • I do think of it as an 80's name. But that doesn't mean I don't think it is pretty!

  • Slightly dated, but not terrible.  If you like it, use it.  I certainly wouldn't side-eye anyone using it.

  • I 100% prefer the name Ashley to Asher. I don't think it's dated - it was popular 20 years ago but the "Ash" names are still here. I say use it!

  • I personally don't think its dated at all. But, my kids are Phillip, Mason and Elizabeth. I like those kind of names. I like Ashley for a boy or a girl. The name you picked out flows good together.

  • I think it's really pretty, even if it is a little dated.  What about Ashlyn?
  • I'm indifferent to Ashley, but I LOVE Iris. Iris Ashley would be pretty too, I think.

  • Thank you for all the input! I appreciate everyone's honesty and thoughts. Ashley hasn't done well against my other girl names in polls (Emily and Adrianna) so I thought I'd try to dig deeper and find out why.

  • Some may say it's dated, but it's fairly classic and has been around for a long time, and it's a heck of a lot better than some of the "popular" names around today, so I say go for it. It's certainly not dated the way "Nancy" or "Crystal" or "Shari" are or anything.

  • Not at all!  It's a nice normal name!  The people who will say its dated are people who are all naming their kids Ava, Grace, and Emma.

  • I think it is dated
  • A friend of mine just named their baby girl Ashley. I've honestly always liked the name and almost prefer it now that it's less common. :) Some names, when dated, lose appeal, but this name has a pretty ring to it to me still.
  • It was definitely more popular in the 80s but it's still usable. If you like it... use it.

  • Kind of dated but I wouldn't think anything of meeting a little Ashley... use it if you and H love it.
