Military Families

Navy Jobs Question

Hello! My DH is going to be seeing the job counselor later this week. I thought I would just ask which jobs are great for advancement and so forth(Sorry if it's a dumb question, I am definitely new to all of this). He is considering engineering or construction, but will obviously be fine with whatever job they tell him to do!

TIA! Any input is greatly appreciated!

Re: Navy Jobs Question

  • What is good for advancement is not necessarily what he should do. 4 years in a job you hate means you want to get out, and that does no one any good. Unhappy Sailors are bad for everyone, their families and units alike.

H's MOS is not good for advancement, but he loves it, so he stayed in it, even lat moved to a different, though similar, MOS even though he might end up forced out because of it. I firmly believe he would be an E6 or E7 if he had gone where the Marine Corps wanted him to when he reenlisted in '09, but he would have been miserable, and his deployment would have been an entirely different kind of mission. Instead, he loves what he does and is a ten year (never been busted down/passed over) E5. I'm happy because he's happy.

Hopefully the career counselor finds something that will make your husband happy and help your family's stability for a long time. Good luck!

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

  • I'm with Stan. DH's rating makes it somewhat of a challenge to pick up rank past E-4 but, he loves what he does (most of the time). That's what is really the most important thing.

  • I agree with PP's.  When I was active duty I only made it to e-5 in 7 1/2 years....advancement was so horrible when I made e-5 only 5 other people made it out of like 300, I was a Mass Communication Specialist.  But I LOVED my job and wouldn't want to have changed it even if another job offered better advancement.

On the other hand my DH is an Intel Specialist and his advancement is pretty good.  He just took his chief Exam and has been in for 10 years. But he loves his job too.

I would go through the list of different jobs that your DH likes and then out of those jobs ask which one has better advancement opportunities.  That way he is at least getting a job that he likes.

  • Stay out of engineeing! My hubby is in this field and the Navy is always downsizing his field. Also advancement is important but so is the job, If he hates it he wont stay and you wont get the benefit of being Navy for any amount of time...

I would say if he like construction he could look in to the SeeBee's they do some great stuff, travel a lot, and make rank very well. Hoever they are also gone a lot of the time, and thats just part of the job...

Talk with him about his options and look in to all aspects of the careers he likes then decide whats best for you both...

    Good Luck

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I agree with PPs.  He should select a job that interests him, not based on faster progression.

DH is in the Air Force, but he was "voluntarily" retrained into structures/construction a little over a year ago.  He went to the joint tech school on the Seabee base in Gulfport, MS.  He loves the job.

  • Thanks for the responses! That definitely makes sense. He would much rather have a job he loved. : ) Hopefully he gets to meet the job counselor soon.
