Preemies

actual vs adjusted age

hi, again...  FTM question:  I see many people have tickers that list both actual and adjusted ages.  What does that mean?  And how are they calculated?

Re: actual vs adjusted age

  • Preemie's actual age is calculated by the day they were actually born. The adjusted age is calculated from their due date. So Tyler was due May 3rd... if he was born then, he would be 9 months old. But, he was born on Feb 12th... so he is almost 1 years old.

The reason they do this is that even though Ty is 1 years old, developmentally they expect him to look and act more like a 9 month old. Because the 3 months he spent in the hospital is like the 3 months he would/should have been in the womb. But eventually, most preemies catch up in development and size by 2 or 3 and then the adjusted age doesn't matter any more.

  • A nurse told me DD would be on track by 2 years.  Honestly I can't see how it would take that long.  We were very lucky she didn't have major problems and for being born at 32 weeks has progressed amazingly well/fast.  She breathes, sees, hears, eats, voids, sleeps like any other baby her own age.  She's a tad bit smaller than other 4 month olds and can still wear some 3 month clothes.  She was slow to gain weight but that was more a nursing/BFing issue than developmental on her part.  And our ped has never has us on an adjusted age type schedule.
