New to this board: Went to ER yesterday for spotting

Hello ladies! I've been on the October 2012 moms board, but check this one out every now and then too. Just wanted to post what happened yesterday, in case anyone has any advice and also for anyone going through something similar (because I always check these boards out to compare if what I'm going through is normal!). So I woke up yesterday and noticed I was spotting. I am just over 5 weeks along. I thought that this was normal, but mentioned it to DH and he suggested I call the Dr just to be sure. The nurse on call phoned me back, and said it's not normal and to go to the ER to get checked out (looking back now, I think she just couldn't legally say that it's common, because what if there WAS a problem and she hadn't told me to look into it?) so DH and I go to the ER asap. They did a pelvic exam, drew blood, and did an intravaginal ultrasound. Pelvic exam was good-Dr said there was no blood. Blood work showed HcG levels at 13101, which is within range. And ultrasound showed the pregnancy being in the right place (not in the tubes or something) BUT he said it didn't show a "fetal pole". So I get sent home and told to follow up with my OB on Monday. Question to you moms: I've googled the "fetal pole" not showing up yet, and from what I've read-it should appear between 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 weeks, so it could still be too early, correct? Has anyone else experienced this? I know now that this is why they won't do an ultrasound so early, because you can't see anything. My nerves are calmer and no spotting today, but I'm a little concerned about the fetal pole. Guess we will see what OB says, I will try to remember to update this post with the result!

  • I spotted a few times between 5 and 6 weeks.  I had a u/s at 6w3d because I'm high risk and my OB didn't want to do it earlier because of exactly what happened to you.  It's very normal and most likely too early to see the fetal pole.  Everyone develops differently and some babies are faster than others.  Mine was slow to start lol  but now is right on track and everything is looking prefect.  Try to relax, there's nothing you can really do at this point anyway.  I know how impossible it is not to worry.  Every twinge had me in a panic till I was out of the first tri.  Good luck!

  • I went at 5 weeks 4 days (ish) and there was what she thought was the beginning of a yolk sac. No fetal pole. I went again at 6 weeks 4 days and there was a strong heartbeat. Just wait until the next u/s. You should definitely see something amazing!

  • try not to worry too much.I know it's hard, but worrying will not change anything. I had spotting at 5 weeks, and my US was normal. Had another episode of spotting at 6 weeks - my US at 7 weeks showed my baby had a strong heartbeat but there was some subchorionic hemorrhage which needed to be monitored.  Had another spotting at 9 weeks, but figured there's nothing I can do but pray. My next check up is scheduled this week. I hope we all have a healthy pregnancy!

  • Thank you all-your responses def made me feel better! Praying for H+H 9 months for all of us :)

  • I went to the doctor early as well, at right about 5 weeks for spotting. He did the same thing yours did, and there was no fetal pole visible. I came back two weeks later for my first "official" u/s and there it was, with a nice strong heartbeat. I've continued to have spotting off an on, which is incredibly nerve wracking but it really can be normal. I'm on pelvic rest but the doctor just cleared me for light exercise (woohoo!) Just think positive, and try not to google too much. It helps to rest and put your feet up too.
