LO's scalp is scaling and flaking

How can I get rid of it?? My MIL told me to use baby oil? Is this true?? Has anyone else experienced this with their LO's??

Ohh -- and why on earth is my home page taking me back to the 1st trimester board??

Yes oil is the best thing. (baby oil, coconut oil, etc) Just rub it on LO's head and leave on for 10 min and then wash/rub LO's head with warm water and wash cloth. It can come back, but it helps! This is what I do at least. I am sure there are many other ways to do it.

My mom told me that when shampooing LO's hair I should scrub his head with a washcloth. It does help a lot to get that dead skin off!

Our Dr said to massage in head and shoulders with a baby hairbrush and then rinse really well. It worked like a charm for us.

We used some baby oil too - be careful not to go crazy with it (or at least be prepared to wash it off for a while). I think I put a little too much, and it took forever to wash out. But it seemed to help some.

I use baby oil on DD's cradle cap. I rub it in and let it sit for awhile and then give her a bath and wash it out. Then I use a fine tooth comb and comb out all the flakey gross skin.

Yup, it's called craddle cap. Baby oil is the traditional way, but we use the nail scrubber from the hospital when we give LO his bath (the kind doctors use to scrub before they go into surgery).

Cradle Cap

DD gets this on the middle of her hairline, it looks more like dry skin here, but in the very back, center of her head it is a big large patch of yellowy thick flakes, it's disgusting... It's caused by natural oils in LOs' hair follicles. So when it gets bad it's always if she hasn't had a bath in a few days ... so it would build up. I massaged in baby oil with my finger tips and then buffed it away with a baby hairbrush, I did that a few times and then followed it with a nice warm bath, shampoo and a nice massage with a warm washcloth. It goes away really easy for me... I just have to get better about giving her full baths so that it doesn't get a chance to build up!

My pedi said the oil was more of a temporary solution and not a fix. He suggested the Head & Shoulders, (original only) massage it in at the beginning of bath and rinse out at the end. Even this wasn't working for our LO enough to get rid of it. He then suggested either Selsun Blue or Nizoral. I ended up buying a bottle of Nizoral ($14.97 at Walmart) and LO's hair and scalp look amazing, it really fixed it instead of just masking the problem.
