Babies: 9 - 12 Months

egg whites

when i was fixing carter his egg yolk this morning i realized that i have no idea why babies can't eat egg whites. does anyone know?

Re: egg whites

  • It has to do with allergies.

However, our pedi said at DD's 9 month appointment that she could have egg whites. She said something about new studies, etc. However, we aren't giving egg whites or citrus until after 1 year (if not longer) because I had a horrible allergy to both as a child.

  • The white is the part that anyone who is going to have an allergic reaction to eggs is going to be allergic to. It's more allergenic than the yolk.  I'm going to start egg yolks next month (fingers crossed that she won't immediately spit it out) and mommy will eat the whites as part of a high protein, low-fat breakfast! • I have been giving him scrambled eggs with the egg whites for about a month now.  The pedi said fine to it and we have no egg allergies in the family.
  • My dd1 had egg yolks at about 10 months.  At 11 months I gave her a whole scrambled egg and she got hives, vomited and cried hysterically until I ran to Walgreens and got Benadryl (about 10 min).

It was awful.  I have no egg allergies in my family.  We now have to carry an epi pen and avoid food with eggs.

I would get some Childrens Benadryl in the house just in case and figure out what your dc dose is, so you don't have to worry about what to do if they do have a reaction to something.

  • Ditto pp. We've only given yolks so far. I'm scared of giving whites and think I'll wait until after 1 year.
