Help with LO's Constipation (Warning: poop description)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

LO is about 70% FF and 30% BF, and her struggling/grunting/crying when she poops (once a day) is not only distressing her but breaking my heart as I can't help her (other than pump her legs and hold her upright). I have no pedi advice yet, but would like to know if any of you have any experience with this yet. The consistency is a little thicker/tackier than soft-serve ice cream. I've heard of giving them some water in a bottle to drink or adding a little brown sugar to their formula but haven't tried them yet. TIA.

Re: Help with LO's Constipation (Warning: poop description)

  • I had this concern too - My pedi says unless the poop is hard, it's not constipation. It just takes their digestive systems awhile to adjust. We did add probiotics and that helped so much!

  • Thanks for the reply! Her formula does contain a probiotic, and I agree that perhaps we just have to wait out these changes in her digestive system as her body matures.
  • I agree with PP... if it's not hard and pellet like then it isn't constipation (even though it may seem like it... poor LO!) We tried probiotics and nothing helped. I don't know what formula you are using but we have LO on similac sensitive and that seems to have helped him quite a bit. Our pedi says that if LO seems to have a congested day that we could add 1-2 oz of prune juice to his bottle (I would see if you can get a low sugar one.... but none of the artificial sweeteners) and that may help to clear him out. Good luck.... if it's any consolation I know our LO can still have off days but he had this problem and it's gotten much better!
  • My pedi said to give LO KARO syrup he hadn't pooped in 5 days. All it took was 1teaspoon. Hello soft serve!!! Then  I problems pooping!

  • It was so hard to watch my boy grunting and straining - we restrained from hanging formula and tried to be patient. Over the past two weeks, it has become so much better.  My pedi said this Normally resolves itself around 12 weeks.
