Cam was jumping off a step on her school playscape Thursday morning and rolled her ankle. They brought her to my class crying, the nurse checked her out, there was not (and hasn't been) any swelling or bruising, but there is an obvious limp. Now, 48 hours later, she's still limping.
She has complained here and there about her foot/ankle hurting, but not like wailing in pain or anything like that.
How long would you let your 2 year old walk with a limp before being seen? I'd hate to use a $45 copay to hear that she's totally fine and it will resolve itself, but I'd also hate not getting her checked out and it being something that needed attention.
Opinions?
Re: Rolled Ankle.. slight limp? WWYD?
Eesh. I don't know. I would probably make an appt. for Monday and then cancel if the limp is gone by then.
I hope it's nothing!
I'd let her walk it off for no more than 3 days. Then an X-ray to rule out a fracture. 3 ways to do that. Ask the pedi if they'll send an order to ARA (there are freestanding facilities all over), Urgent Care or ER.
Seeing the pedi without an x-ray is useless. They'll just look at it, scratch their chin and say "Hmmmm. It could just be sprained or it could be broken. Let's get an X-ray to make sure". Then to ARA, then back to the pedi to get the results usually. Most won't tell you over the phone.
In the mean time, Motrin.
I'd also think about getting x-rays.
by the way, the urgent care on Grand Ave. Pkwy and Central Commerce takes them but will be considered as ER for your co-pay (at least with mine).
the urgent care right next to NAMC and the jaguar dealership was just an urgent care co-pay.
I say x-ray just because both times E broke her arm it NEVER got swollen and it NEVER turned red, etc, but she didn't like using it (but definitely COULD use it) and complained it hurt some.

Yup this. When I was 3 I jumped off the couch pretending to be superman and then my parents took me to the lake for the weekend and on Mon. took me to the Dr. My arm was broken in 2 different places but showed no signs of it. I still give my parents a hard time.
I know this was posted a couple days ago, but if she hasn't been seen...
She needs to be seen. I don't know how your insurance works, but if possible, I would make an appt. with Pediatric Orthopedics. There is a good chance you will end up there anyway.
I'm a Nurse Pracitioner and I used to work at the Pedi Ortho place in Austin (in my former, non-mom life!). I can tell you that if a 2 year old is limping even a day later, there is something going on. A lot of times (more often that not) it is a fracture. We always said, "Toddlers don't sprain, they fracture." Unfortunately, a lot of doctors won't notice the fracture due to the difficulty seeing it on XR (because of the growth plates). If she's still limping, and someone has told you she's fine (even if they didn't see anything on XR), I would look into it further, but that's just me.
The good news is, if it is a fracture (a minor one, obviously), babies this age heal so fast, she would probably be fine, even if nothing was done!
Good luck and I hope she's okay!

Of course, if she's not limping anymore, then great! I wouldn't really worry about it.
