How soon to look for daycare and recs in Fairfax?

So I am about 7 weeks along, and in poking around the September 2012 moms board, apparently we should consider looking for daycare pretty soon.  It seems crazy early, but maybe that makes sense, especially here in DC?  If we should start looking now, any recommendations in Fairfax near the Fair Oaks area?

TIA!

  • Congratulations!

Daycare centers tend to have waiting lists, so yes, you want to get on the waiting lists soon.  Others on this board can share their experiences with that.

With in-home daycare, due to circumstances out of my control, we had to wait until after my first baby was born to look while I was off of work for ten weeks. The great thing about in-home is you look about 2-3-4 months before you need the care, so waiting until after baby is born is fine.

Here is a post from the Nest yesterday, DC Board, that may be helpful:

  • I am in the Fair Oaks area too, and am 7months along and really just started looking at daycare.  The place I really want (Winwood on rt 50) doesn't have an opening for an infant until September (and they can't guarantee it). Other places where we have looked are available now and in June when the LO will be about 2 months and I have to go back to work.  I would really start looking at about 4 to 5 months. Good luck and congrats!
  • My DS is at the Winwood on 50 and we are very happy.  We got on the waiting list when I was 8 weeks pregnant (Dec '10).  A spot for him opened up in October '11 which was a month earlier than we wanted but we took it because they did not expect another spot to open until June '12.  Having said that, I was very happy that we took the spot because it allowed a much easier transition for me.
  • Thanks ladies!  I am considering Winwood as well, as it's the closest daycare center to our house.  Our neighbor sends her 17-month old there and has recently expressed some concerns, so I am glad to hear some more positive things about it.  We might also consider an in-home daycare if we can find a person that we can trust nearby, but it all depends on the price.

    Thanks again!
