Hi everyone! I love the idea of wearing my newborn in a Moby wrap as much as possible, but after reading that it's only really good up to 15 pounds I'm not sure I want to buy one for just a few months. We'd rather save our money and get a good carrier we can both use for longer term, like a Beco or Ergo. Looking at the Moby wraps, they seem pretty straightforward to make, so I figured I would try and make my own. Right now I'm planning to buy a length of cotton jersey, cut it to size, and maybe hem the edges. Does this sound reasonable, or am I missing some crucial part of their construction?
Also, would anyone be able to tell me approximately what length I'd have to buy, and what width I'd have to cut it to? I'm guessing about a foot (width), am I way off?
Re: Making my own Moby-style wrap?
Amazon carries the original Moby wrap, so I was able to find the dimensions there:
Product Dimensions: 217 x 24 inches
I got this on a post from another board:

I had about 3 yards of jersey knit at home that I cut in half lengthwise and followed the wrapping instructions on the site. I will say that I didn't master getting it tied properly (either too tight or too loose), but I don't know if that was the fabric or my ineptness
Good luck!
I love your pocket, idea!
While a Moby can be used to 35 lbs, I agree with PP that they max out in comfort around 15 lbs (even less, for me).
OP--have you considered buying a used Moby? I see them on CL in my area frequently for a cost low enough to beat out making one.
More Green For Less Green
Definitely wider as pp mentioned. I think it's unreasonable to hem. WAY too much work. Jersey won't unravel.
I made my own too and it worked fine. I never used it centered though, because when I did the knot ended up in the small of my back, I started out slightly off center so the knot would be on my side and I could sit down.
Mine just fits at 5meters long, make it atleast 20 inches wide. I've made a few (I sell them) and the longer ones are more like 5.5 meters and I like that length better.
I usually use cotton jersey, something with stretch but not too much.
Here's the most recent one I've made, I add fun fabric to the middle and ends.
