Potty Training ? (maybe TMI if you're sensitive!)

We started the 3 day PTing method on Friday and though the first day and a half were a little rough, he's doing great now and even got up twice last night to pee! The problem now is that he won't poop on the potty. He keeps telling me his bottom hurts and grabbing it, but won't sit on his potty long enough to poop. He's had about 3 fits this morning because he wants a diaper

He has his own small potty and I'm going to go out to get an insert for the big potty today. We're doing a sticker chart (5 sticker=toy, 1 sticker for pee, 2 for poop) as well as a treat each time he uses the potty. Any ideas how to overcome this? I'm afraid he's going to get really constipated and then it's going to hurt to go, which will probably make the problem worse.

  • I am by NO means an expert...We ended up going back to siapers to try to poop...which also didn't work and now she's often going during naps and at night. BUT...we have had success a couple times just hanging out in the bathroom. We kind of camp out in there. We'll read books, watch the iPad...whatever...with pants off. The first couple times were TRAUMATIC! She was screaming because she didn't want to go but we just held ground because we knew putting her diaper on wasn't going to help either since she wouldn't go in it. The first time, she ended up pooping on the floor when she couldn't hold it. But the other times she's finally sat down when it's coming. Unfortunately, since we totally interrupted the three day plan followed by my hospital stay we're now totally drawing it out... Good luck to you!

  • Pooping in the potty is hard. Ben is over four and YESTERDAY (he's been PT'd since this summer) he pooped in the toilet for the first time.

Usually he'll ask for a pull-up so he can poop, but yesterday he decided to go on the potty. I think one of the tricks was that he was drinking a lot of water instead of milk. Another was I think he was just ready.

    Good luck.

  • I think sometimes, it helps if they can relax a little bit. What has always worked for us is to put the little potty in front of their favorite show and let them sit on it and poop while watching the show. If they get up or stop trying, the show goes off.

Also, I always gave big rewards for the first few poops. I found that stickers just didn't cut it until they overcame the fear!

  • We did the 3 day with Megan and she had the same trouble with poop.  It lasted about 1 to 2 weeks - I can't remember exactly anymore :-)  She would only poop every other day because she held it and it seemed to be afternoons.  Once we figured out which day and approx time I just stayed with her and then just ran her to the potty when she was starting.  She would go part in her pants, part in the potty.  It might have taken less time if she was going more than once every other day... and on top of that it was hard to catch her that one time in 48hrs that she went!  But she got it, it seemed like it just took a couple times before she realized it was ok.  We also got a couple poop books and talked a lot about pooping. I have no idea if they helped but I figured it was worth a shot!  We got Everyone Poops and Where's the Poop.  I tried to really just listen to her and reflect a lot of what she was feeling too.  I just think it was really hard to transition from pooping in a standing squat to pooping in a sitting position and that she really wanted to poop standing up.  And she also liked to poop behind the couch so it was tough to switch locations too.  Megan actually liked the little potty for pooping more because she could get more of a squat position.

Good luck, and yay for getting the pee part!!!

  • We've had success with either reading a book while he sits on the potty, or me giving him my phone and letting him watch videos (of himself--ha!).

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Still nothing :/ I think he almost went this afternoon, but freaked out and stood up and told me he needed a diaper. We read a bunch of poop/potty books this afternoon, but when you ask him, he still says that poop goes in a diaper. *sigh* lol

Would it be okay to preemptively give him Miralax? I'm really afraid he's going to get (or already is) constipated.
