VBAC

How far past your due date would you choose to go?

...before agreeing to a RCS?

I feel like my body is great at making and carrying babies, but not so much at getting them out. :) My doctor says at 41 weeks, we'll talk and see about gentle induction or scheduling a c-section. I'm glad she's saying we don't even have to talk until then, but I am also nervous about going past 42 weeks. Last time, I was induced at 42+2, and it sucked. I am terrified of being induced and then having another EMCS. And just having another CS in general. Mainly I don't want to be laid up with a newborn and an 18-month-old afterwards.

I tried EVERYTHING last time to get the kid out. Sex, foods, walking three miles a day, accupressure, herbs, birth ball, swimming, positive thoughts, massage, gah! This time, i feel so helpless. I still have a couple of weeks to get this baby out, but I can't help trying to think ahead and plan.

  • I would be uncomfortable going past 42, too.  I know the absolute risk remains low, but the fact that the risk of complications rise sharply after 41 weeks just doesn't make it worth it to me.  I bake babies too long, too. :)

  • I was comfortable going to 42 weeks, and if nothing happened I was also comfortable attempting gentle induction methods.  My personal cutoff was 42w3d, assuming all was well with baby during that time.  Keep in mind though, once you hit 40 weeks it's likely your provider will have you come in for NSTs, u/s, and amniotic fluid checks every couple of days.  I was with a hospital midwife group, and this was their protocol.

With DS, I went in for an NST at 41w0d and I requested they sweep my membranes.  I went into labor about 14 hours later at 41w1d and delivered at 41w2d.  I think out of all of the "methods" I tried, acupuncture and getting my membranes swept were the most helpful.  But I also believe my body waited to begin actual labor until it was ready...

  • My MWs will allow up to 42 weeks. +42 weeks makes me uneasy so it would really depend on how I felt and the MWs advice at that point.

  • My (home) MW will let you go as long as you need to, so long as mom, baby and placenta are healthy...so that's my plan.  Not sure what I'll do if I get to 42 weeks this time (DS was 10 days late)!

  • I was 9 days past my due date w/ DD, it was a VBAC.  I was fine with it, besides being HUGE lol.

  • My RCS is scheduled for 10 days past my due date. My OB was willing to let me go up to 42 weeks but nothing after.

  • I accidentally miscalculated and gave my midwife a LMP 2 days later than it should have been based on O date. So she has my due date as 2 days later. I've decided I'm good with that, as the state requires transfer to OB care after 42w (which = cesarean), and I'm personally comfortable (if NST/BPP look good) at going to 42+2 or a little more. So this covers me by a few days.

  • as long as the baby and i were both healthy, i have no problem going past 42 weeks. we can both be monitored for risks that increase with gestation. otherwise, there is no medical need to induce.

i firmly believe that baby will come when baby is ready.

i went into spontaneous labor with #1 at 41.3 and had my c/s at 41.5.

i went into spontaneous labor and birthed my vbac baby at 41.6. i had no intentions of inducing and had not discussed it at all with my care provider.

  • As long as the continued monitored proved baby to be healthy. After 41wks there'll likely be weekly or biweekly NSTs.

I will not agree to induction without a medical reason, including if that means I go over 42 weeks. You are not actually over due or post dates until after 42 weeks, and going post dates is not a medical inclination that necessitates induction.

I have history of large baby (no GD). I also know my exact ovulation day, so the dates can't be off. Knowing these two things, IF nothing happened naturally by 43 weeks and if baby was measuring large, I'd agree to induction as a last resort. But, before that I'd be trying all sorts of home remedies and sweeping membranes several times.

In fact, if my cervix is favorable, I'd consider having my membranes sweeped at 41 weeks.
